The Hidden Irony in People Now Doing a Community Call to Action

in #hypocrisy5 years ago (edited)

When the STEEM price was high - and back when it was low the first time, but had upwards potential - a popular school of thought around these parts was raw individualism.

People would defend their unwillingness to even spit at the general direction of someone's house that was on fire because it would be socialism and communism to expect anyone to do even the smallest thing to help another person out.

When everything was fine, and everyone was making money off of the free money tree, everybody was now a successful venture capitalist investor superhero, touting the libertarian clichés that all rationalize just why no one should ever care about one's community - only their own personal gain and profit.

That's why it's so amusing to me that now that there's a crisis, the price isn't doing good, and people's profits are either in danger, or have ceased completely, the same people who would have called you a communist for bringing up "community" even once in passing, are the ones saying: "We need to come together as a community now, we need to be strong together and head forward as a group!"

Which roughly translates to: "Mommy, I made a bad investment and a terrible mistake and now I'm scared, I want other people to fix this mess for me."

Gee, what turned y'all to such socialists? Talking about community and whatnot. Aren't you all rugged individualists? Why should the community give two shits about you when you would never give two shits about the community if the price was higher?

Clean up your own mess, geeze. You often learn it as a kid, but usually at the very latest when you move to your first apartment of your own, out of your parents' basement.

Maybe it's high time?

Sort:

They indeed need community. Without community they even wouldn't have had those nice times when they were having a blast.

It was the community which built that. Yet again they need the community to raise their elitist pedestal.

They won't admit such though, instead now they will pull the leader slash guru card and call it building THEIR tribe.

I wasn't around. I doubt that our definition of community is the same. I still cringe at this "come together" thing. Really.

We can never come together.

We are too many.

Everyone should do their thing and get rewarded accordingly and if the subjectiveness of such mechanism becomes too blurry and problematic, let math handle it.

I agree, with the caveat that there's nothing to come together around in this case, so it makes it pretty much a nothing action.

Keep doing the things that you enjoy, that's my motto!

Yeah, I do agree that the Steemit "community" is probably too many to "come together". But it's a cry for help by desperate people who are upset they need to take personal responsibility over their choices.

It's just funny that they're the same people who would talk about personal responsibility if it was someone else in trouble.

"Maybe it's high time?"

Are you promoting use of cannabis?

People in California seem happier and more mellow than people on Steemit right now, so maybe?

Forget the appeal of community, this is a social media and as a social media, what makes it work is the attention you give it. What we should focus on is the power model that is so evidenced here and the concentration of that power in the hands of those who think it contributes something and contributes nothing to the growth of this ecosystem.

Examples or GTFO

Don't worry, I'm pretty much leaning towards GTFO on my own anyway. :p

I'm not going to name names and start stupid drama. But yes, this was aimed at a few users in specific.

What if drama is the force which carries Steem? People get upset at each other and purchase Steem to get power to flag their enemies. This is the only reason why people would purchase Steem.

Sure, I understand what you mean. However "some people" without evidence turns your analysis into just an opinion. Which is probably fine too. I'm not saying you're wrong but hard to look at it beyond that if we don't have the facts.

I don't need you to. This was just a rant. By me. For me. And for whoever found some value in it.

It wasn't meant to be a piece that turns heads or goes viral, or proves a point or anything. More like a "Facebook status".

I appreciate and understand your point, though, don't get me wrong.
