International cricket was held in India for the first time in December 1933 when the Gymkhana Ground in Mumbai played host to the India-England Test match.

The Gymkhana Grounds lie in the southern end of the Azad Maidan. The ground itself is on rented property. It has a triangular territory, with the southern end facing the VSNL building. MG Road and H Somal Marg are the two streets on either end that start from the southern end. It is confined by an easy route path which interfaces Churchgate to Victoria Terminus.

The ground had the distinction of facilitating India's first Test cricket Match on 15 December 1933,captained by CK Nayudu. Temporary stands were set up at the ground to suit a record crowd of 50,000 individuals, with tickets offering at five times their standard price. The match is associated with Lala Amarnath’s century, noted to be a standout amongst other innings played in Indian cricket. It hasn't facilitated any senior matches since the Brabourne Stadium had its spot in 1937, replacing the ground as the venue for Bombay Pentangular and International matches.
