Informationwar writing contest: What does July 4th 1776 mean to Newcastle
July 4 1776 is the day that enlightenment principles were put into practice on a massive scale. Prior to the Declaration of Independence, no government had the opportunity to implement a new method of rule that was not based upon tradition and tyranny, but rather upon equality, reason and prosperity for all.
As someone who lives in Canada (whose population is rooted in Loyalist immigrants fleeing the post Revolution USA) I have deep and elemental reverence for the courage and wisdom that America’s founding fathers displayed.
The Declaration of Independence is perhaps the pinnacle of a fight for a government of the people, for the people and by the people that began centuries prior.
The Brutish has fought long and hard for more rights and autonomy that many lives were lost to achieve: From the Magna Carta, to the formation of Parliament, to the Killing of King Charles, to Guy Fawkes. This cultural lineage of property ownership, common law, and freedom from government overreach was perfected in the Declaration of Independence.
I am awestruck at the courage that the Revolutionary leaders showed. In 1776 it was not at all clear that the Americans would win. The threat of hanging for treason was very real as Jefferson wrote his Declaration.
A story that exemplifies the courage and patriotism that I am so grateful for is this: Benjamin Franklin was an international celebrity and risked death as an elderly man to walk through deep snow from Philadelphia to Quebec in the winter of 1776. He went there to try to persuade the people of Quebec to join the Revolution. Unfortunately the people of Quebec did not join the cause of liberty, but after this Franklin and his son never again has a good relationship because his son was a loyalist. Franklin (and thousands of others) risked his life, reputation, fortune and his family for the ideals written on that most perfect Declaration of Independence.
People around the world must never forget this and we all must try to emulate these heroes in any way possible to spread the virtues of truth and liberty.
To all Americans: happy Fourth of July. The ideals of your remarkable founding fathers did more to spread liberty and freedom around the world than any other collection of people in the history of our world.

Each of us living beings are over the course of our lives presented with choices. Those choices become manifest in the context of our actions. What we all experience as a result of our actions are consequences. Sadly people are rebelling against that which is there power. The power to know themselves and make the changes that affect the consequences, and manifest their desires.
To me 1776 was a proof of the people by the people and for the people. We today have the same situation and really the same choices to make. May we all choose wisely and act accordingly.
Great point about the parallels to the modern world. Hopefully people always stay aware of how easy it is to lose our freedoms unless we continue to fight.
