Sound Suppressor From an Oil Filter

DISCLAIMER: Sound Suppressors are illegal in many states, so I advise you to check and make certain you can have one legally... If not- well, I won't tell.

I've done quite a bit of research on this subject and found that almost any hollow tubular object can be converted into a suppressor- There's no such thing as a "silencer." This includes, oil filters (which the simplest to make and install) and most effective, Maglite flashlights, fuel filters, and even 2 liter pop bottles.

The biggest challenge is in selecting an adapter. Different firearms have different thread patterns (if any at all) and the threads on the adapter must fit the threads on the firearm (ID), as well as the threads on the filter you select (OD). The good news is that fuel filter threading is standardized for the most part although they may differ on American and foreign cars. This is a typical adapter...

Like I said the oil filter suppressor seems to be the simplest and easiest to make. There are others that, if you're mechanically inclined and have access to a machine shop, may be equally effective. One is made from a solvent trap filter...

This is a bit more expensive and requires an extra part or two. I'll leave links as to how to how to make these below. HOWEVER, having said this, PLEASE check and make sure it's legal to have one in your state. I live in Arkansas, so I can't have one, as tempting as it may be. The last link shows a video of a .22 being fired through an oil filter suppressor and it's surprisingly quiet. Good Luck and Stay Legal (or at least don't get caught)!

There is an old Simpson's episode where they outlawed everything down to pointy sticks, I did not realize it was a blueprint for society...

That's where we're headed!

great post. But it looks like you have to use a scope or else you can't see over the iron sites with a suppressor on correct?
you mean it's not like in the movies where you just hear a "spit" sound when they're using silencers?

With the long thin filter you can use open sights ok... and no, it isn't like in the movies, except with a .22... anything larger still makes some noise.

thank you sir. well it would be nice if we could use them and they were effective
enough not to need hearing protection especially the large bulky headsets.

They're not that loud... check the video on the last link, it shows one in action.

yes sir checked it out. The .22s were silent except the action of the gun working, I thought that was amazing. I wonder if hitmen or assassins use something like that at times.

I've seen a 2 liter pop bottle used once on a .22 with some steel wool in it. They just taped it on the end of a rifle and it had the same effect. I'm sure that if I can figure this out the "pros" surely must have... I'm just a crazy old man.

yeah crazy like a Fox!
well I was thinking of Mafia hits but I think they like to use
.22s to the head so they wouldn't need the oil filter type.

Now look what you have gone and done! What a sense of humor you have @richq11. 🐓🐓

This was by special request... somebody wanted it.

Watched the last video. Impressive. Backyard shooting and no neighbors calling 911.

I live in Arkansas in a city of about 100,000 and everybody has guns... and we shoot from time to time. Nobody calls the cops and believe it or not, we have about 1 murder every 2-3 years (and it's usually some Mexican stabbing his wife).

Tell that to a liberal. I grew up watching westerns on TV. It was the wild west with bad guys shooting up the town. What stopped the lawlessness? A good guy with a faster gun and towns people to back him up with their guns, not take all the town's peoples guns away.

Read the story of Jack Yantis, and weep for what we lost in the west...

It's deadly and really scary
It must be combated with certainty

Your Advice is really good and always we should check legally. Thanks for best informational Article share with us.

I believe even in states where they are allowed one would need to pay the federal tax stamp even on a homemade suppressor. Technically.

I have a feeling that people that make these aren't that concerned about tax stamps... or in states where they're not

Perhaps some, in my experience though most people who own their guns legally are sticklers for the law and can afford the $200 to enjoy their suppressor wherever they like without fear of redress.
