why everyone loses in the "cultural appropriation" war

Once again some white person wore something created in a historically nonwhite country and the moral busybodies have taken up the mantel of "keyboard warrior" to cyber bully and grandstand over what is a nonissue. If you don't know what's happening, a high school girl wore a traditional Chinese dress to prom and the internet seems to have collectively lost its mind. While you are absolutely free to speak on someone else's actions and even critique them, the idea of cultural appropriation is a complete nonstarter.

What is cultural appropriation?

This is a frankly dumb idea that particular items or traditions of certain races/cultures belongs exclusively to those brought up in the culture, or members of the race. It seems to only apply to creations of generally nonwhite creations (traditional clothes, music, hairstyles and crap like that), but that is neither here nor there.

Lets play a game:

I'll pretend to be utterly bereft of intelligence and you point out exactly how terrible the result is.

No one can use anything created by someone of a different cultural heritage.

  • I, a white person, would be missing out on rock and jazz music, coffee, gas masks, paper, and the Sony Playstation.

  • If you aren't white you can't use combustion engines, the majority of modern medicine, refrigeration, or functional legal systems.

Are you beginning to see how dangerous this idea is? Inventors who happen to have been white have created amazing things. Asian and black inventors have done the same. If only those who look like the creator can benefit, the world is a much sadder place.

I am fully aware that I picked examples in favor of one side, but that was to highlight a point. If the psycho-left continues pushing this, the psycho-right will say "fine, I'll play your game, but I'm playing to win". And win they shall. I don't want the authoritarian right to win anymore than I want the authoritarian left to. Let's all chill here.

Remember when America stood for peaceful integration where all benefit from the positive aspects of each other's cultures?

Yeah, me neither

Did CNN or MSNBC find any lunatics who claimed (with a straight face) that the #PromDress was 'cultural appropriation' or does Tucker Carlson win an award for finding #AreuCathy who was willing to do it? 😆

I didn't see his coverage of it. I tend to stay away from TV news since it is too directly tied to ad rev. I saw one dude had a viral tweet where he was getting real mad though.

The problem with the american ship of state is that it has barnacles...(socialists)

I think there is a wider problem. The real problem seems to be people who claim the moral or legal authority to tell other people how to live, while not living as they demand. Socialists are a prime example of it. Same goes for people who support tax funded social programs. But this pathology really spreads farther and deeper than the typical college Stalinists.

Man, this has been a tough one for me, @roofcore... I agree to an extent about the far-right vs far-left, I don't want a civil war... but I honestly don't think the far-left can be compromised with or even talked to for that matter, at least in a constructive manner. They don't believe in free speech, property rights, or freedom in general... Is there really a common ground for civility and discussion? I would say for some, but there is fair amount that is too far gone and will never return to sanity... Cultural appropriation is the claim to remote ownership over intergenerational intellectual property. In my eyes, it's a sign of their mental decay...

Oh it is mindbogglingly stupid. I mean as long as we get to the point where everyone can support the idea that aggression is wrong, it would be fine. We would still have to hear them whine all the time, but at least they can't come for your stuff in the same way you can't come after theirs. They can try all the idiotic things they want too, they just can't force anyone to participate or to bail them out when their plans inevitably fail.

Anything to cause division...smdh. When we finally realize we are all connected is the day the system begins its collapse. I hope I live long enough to see it.

I don't think hope is lost. I hope the rabid divisionist will divide themselves from productive society and then divide amongst themselves until they are functionally irrelevant.

The same people who call for diversity and inclusion flip out if a pretty white girl wears an Asian dress. They're not really insulted, they're just racist against young pretty white girls.

I saw french fries on a menu at a Chinese restaurant, should we start a Twitter storm about cultural appropriation? @ironshield

I'm pretty sure 99% aren't genuinely mad. They are just told that others are mad and that the officially supported response is to be mad. When you put these people on the spot, they don't generally have an argument for their actions that is unique or intelligent.

Yo same. My local chinese joint has the best fries actually. I don't know what it is, but I certainly don't mind. You reminded me of a response someone had to the girl:

Having just "Sad." by itself. Seems like she is appropriating MAGA culture lol. Have a follow, you seem like a cool dude.

The Trump brand has become so fashionable, now even the delusional are using it. MAGA cultural appropriation. Sad. @ironshield

It is like the idea that the left has that they could win the civil war (that they are trying to start)

The left think that they are in right, standing on higher virtues, and that they can go through life without offending anyone.

But, they are wrong in everything.
Stalin tried socialism, he only killed millions of people to get them to work
Mao tried socialism, he killed millions more people
but they think that socialism hasn't been tried.

Back to the civil war, they believe the memes that show that the red states make most of the money (because that is where the crumbling manufacturing and import centers are).

But, they do not realize that everything starts in those fly over countries. All the food, all the minerals, all the coal, all the gas, everything.

And when they cut themselves off by declaring war, they will be left with about three days supply. And then reality crashes in. And the war will be over. The blue states may not have even known there was a war.

As sad as I think it sounds, you might be right. The thing is, if a militant leftism strikes and fails, a militant right-wing ideology will take hold to make sure the left can't strike again. That could easily lead to the same evils that the leftists would have produced, but the right wing is doing it. The best idea is to admit that strife gives us nothing and "to live and let live" is the most successful way of life.

Oh, there's a lot more to this. It really boils down to one bitter self righteous racist Asian man who decided to go on a condescension bender. Lots of sheeple jumped on his bandwagon.

Then lots of other people, some of them high profile apparently, started hitting back and pointing out his hypocrisy. They told him to stop calling himself Jeremy, stop wearing an Adidas ball cap, stop typing in English on a keyboard in order to post on Twitter/the internet because all those things are from "white culture"...he got thoroughly schooled. Then somebody unearthed tweets where he has used the N word and the tables were turned.

My favorite comment on the whole thing was where somebody pointed out that screaming "cultural appropriation!" is the equivalent of little kids yelling at each other "stop copying me!!" In other words, these folks need to freaking grow up and find more important things to focus on.

I'm really tired of the far left's ideology that white people are supposed to worship everybody else's culture as superior--but from afar, "only look, don't touch." Ever heard of Rousseau's "noble savage" theory? Personally I think what we're seeing today is the fruition of this concept having taken root in education.

yeah I saw it unfolding on twitter. As much as the platform is a time-sink, watching people say stupid things and then get absolutely owned by their past self never gets old. I'm pretty sure most people wouldn't be mad if they weren't conditioned to adopt what they think the majority moral response is. Twitter Moments had a blurb about the situation and the headline was phrased something like "This white girl wore a Chinese dress, and people are pissed". Maybe we wouldn't have to deal with this if the corporate scumbags weren't telling people how they should behave.

It is such a moronic proposition and I would say it is imminently harmful.

I think the noble savage might have something to do with it. It ultimately comes down to the idea that white people now are to be held accountable for the actions of other white people in current year, and of generations past. That seems to be the continuous thread through these ideas.

I had thought the problem was the dress was somewhat sheer but I didn't read the article I had seen I just skimmed over it

Awesome post!! Keep it up and check out THIS POST as well as I have something similar.
