How to legally build an AR-15, at home, by hand.steemCreated with Sketch.

There is a legal way to build your own AR-15, using basic tools. The casting on the right is a virgin 80% lower, which is the part you must register when you buy a gun, but if, and only IF; it is 100% machined.

If it is 80% machined, as this virgin 80% lower is, not only can it be shipped directly to your house, but it needs no registration as a firearm. You can legally finish the other 20%, using drills and a file, FOR YOU OWN PERSONAL USE. The cavities do not have to be pretty inside, this is fairly forgiving; and is a lot of fun to build!

Here is a picture of a virgin 80% lower beside a finished lower I borrowed from a young man, for these pictures:

Lowers can be purchased already black anodized, but I prefer raw aluminum so I can anodize it when it is finished.

Here is a picture that shows the rough surface he left, that will not harm the function of the firearm once assembled:

There are some holes that must be accurately positioned and sized. The people that sell these 80% lowers make drill jigs they sell fof a small up charge, that allow you to drill these holes accurately, with a hand drill.

Drilling the perimeter, with many small drills, taking care with drill depth; then drilling the center ouf with larger drills, will help clear the cavity. Depth is your only concern here.

Once the drilling is done, a file or a dremel can be used to clean up the cavity. I recommend drilling the holes after the cavity is finished.

The drilled holes are easier to see here.

There are a lot of videos that will show you how to finish the AR-15 build. It can be a lot if fun to finish one of these.

well well well....look who finally produced a decent post about the subject. One that is practical and educational as well. It's about time sir smithlabs. Those are great photos that let us see what it takes, that's no big deal. It's good news too.
Some people may question your idea of fun though.

Fun is what relaxes us. I find relaxation by pissing off liberals! The AR is too light of a round for my liking, but liberals hate it, soooo much....

:)>

hahaha! sir smithlabs! they don't even know what it fires they just think it looks like a military weapon so it has to go!

They strike in ignorance at shadows, with no interest in learning any real knowledge about that which they pass judgement upon!

:)>

sir smithlabs! oh is that how you learned to deal with life?

I deal with Life using the Bible, and my intelligence, to focus on whatever problem I have....

Hell yeah! Fun stuff! And not that hard to build!

I have a vertical mill, so that makes it even easier.

But they are fun to build! Lots of calibre options too.

Thinking about an AR-10 too, LOL!

:)>

Definitely! Anything from 22lr and 17hmr to 50 bmg..

Just get a great trigger...!

And next up the ar10 is amazing I'd love to get into 338 Federal.

I will start with 308 (already have it). I hunt with a 300 Win Mag, and my M-14 is a 308. All fun toys!

I am working on a flint lock rifle too....

Shit why not spin a black powder revolver? Like the ruger old army. You can't buy those. And wish I had a vertical mill. Or cnc and some programs!

I carry a 44 colt Navy percussion when I hunt Black Powder, so If I hit a deer, they do not have to suffer while I reload. I really like that Pistol, and I load her heavy!

I have an entire machine shop; 3 mills, 2 engine lathes, turret lathe, cylindrical grinder, surface grinder, 12 inch steel bandsaw, welding, casting, 3-d printing, and lost wax casting.

I make what I need to have. Works well for me.

:)>

Adopt me! Can me and dog just live in the shop and make fun toys? Miss making stuff last real job I had was lead machinist. Hell I was the only one that knew what a micrometer was let alone how to pronounce it.

Sounds good 'son'; LOL! I was raised in a machine shop, so I should have been smarter than to buy all this stuff!

I am moving this stuff to the new property I bought out by the lake. Have to build a shop first, but I have moved one mill already. I have a little storage space out there already.

But I like making things, so I needed the machinery. I am an industrial fixer, and sometimes I have to make strange things. Some are electronic and some are machined; and sometimes it needs to be a mix of both.

It is never boring anyway.

You got discord I'd love to help you grow your account faster! You got good stuff.

My Linex OS does not do discord, but my Android tablet does, I will look for you there.

Sweet! Yeah man let's get you rocking!

I have to finish a test plan yet tonight, for a meeting tomorrow; but I will discord tomorrow.

It looks like a 3 phase dual rectifier in a cable. It will be a pain to test this assembly! All I have to do is too tell them how to test it without pulling every cable apart.

Since the cables are built into Boeing aircraft and removing them is Tough! Never boring, now I just need to figure out how to test it non destructively....
