Facebook Approves 100 Fake Disclosures of Political Ads By Journalists Pretending To Be Senators + Hacking Democracy and Relevance of Videodrome

in #informationwar5 years ago (edited)

It's easy to spin a narrative when things don't go your way. it is to promise the world when you want things to go your way. All sorts of news got posted on Facebook and other social media. But the narrative was about some "Russian Meddling". It was also blown completely out of promotion compared to hundreds of millions spent on campaigns. Either way Facebook made promises. They some journalists tested them. The results are predictable.

They Made It Worse

Now practically anybody could be pretending to be any famous figure and pay for ads and get an approval from Facebook. This is the equivalent of giving AAA ratings to junk bonds leading upto the financial crisis of 2008 but this time we have a crisis of truth. When people who are seeing ads don't get an official name, they can at least be skeptical.. they have the incentive to be like that. But Facebook is giving their seal of approval to utter lies. This is complete fraud.

I mean how can you effectively vet millions of ads and their payers? Are you going to hire some private detective or at least experts? No. Experts are busy with more innovation related stuff (probably some machine learning etc.) We have the least qualified individuals (who knows if it is even outsourced) vetting and approving these ads and identities giving way to officially sanctioned fraud.

The Reality Winner Case

Reality Leigh Winner was an American intelligence specialist. In 2017, she was charged with "removing classified material from a government facility and mailing it to a news outlet" Basically she just leaked a report on Russian election interference. She was prosecuted under Espionage Act and eventually received the longest sentence ever for an unauthorized disclosure to the media.

The Lincolnton jail usually has about a half dozen or, at most, a dozen female inmates, according to Winner’s mother. Similar to local jails across the country, many inmates have been arrested on drug offenses, and some go through withdrawals while there. Winner has been attacked on one occasion – she ended up with a gash on her head, according to her mother. Billie Winner-Davis also said that her daughter has access to a small outdoor pen for about 30 minutes of exercise a day, though not on weekends – that is the entirety of her time outside.

Strip searches are a routine feature of life. When she is taken to the federal courthouse about 45 miles away in Augusta, Winner is strip-searched after every visit to the courtroom and every meeting with her lawyers, her mother said. She is also shackled at the ankles and the waist (she fell once, and because her hands were bound, she landed on her face, bruising it). The whole process is so humiliating that, according to Winner’s mother, she has asked to not attend the hearings in Augusta unless it is absolutely necessary.

This is a small quote from a series of articles on the matter. Even thouse who acted to bring awareness about "Russian Meddling" got treated under extremely terrible conditions making it impossible for her lawyers to defend her due to some nonsensical interpretations of law.

If Democracy Can Be Hacked So Easily, Why Bother With It?

That's from a Emmy nominated HBO documentary released in 2006. We have a lot more technology involved these days and the level of negligence from officials presented in the documentary is off the charts. Plus, if few hundred thousand dollars can swing an election, why bother with them at all?

Democracy is a cancer and the social media has supercharged it. The mid has become something that is easily affected and programmed by the technological communication devices around turning the "Users" into NPCs. On many grounds Videodrome (1983) by David Cronenberg is more prophetic and spot on than a work like 1984. At the time there was no internet. It was just CRT TVs. But one thing is far more relevant today than it was 20 years after the release of the movie.

Whatever appears on the television screen emerges as raw experience for those who are watching
therefore television is reality and reality is less than television.
