No More Money

Imagine a world without money. Imagine a world in which we all declare the Earth and all its resources to be the common heritage of all of the worlds people, then there's no need for armies, prisons, navies or taxes. None of that is necessary.

It's been almost two years now since Jacque Fresco passed away, at an age of 101 years. This world without money, armies or criminality is the foundation of his brainchild, The Venus Project. Jacque Fresco was a brilliant man, who could have done anything with his life; he could have spent his time earning a lot of money, as he is a great engineer, designer and futurist. Instead he chose to dedicate his entire adult life to promote his vision for a future mankind.

His ideas are based on the premise that humans are shaped by their environment, and that our environment is shaped by our economic activities. Born in 1916, Jacque talked about managing the planets resources in a responsible and sensible way, long before the Al Gores of our time started their efforts. Fresco recognized that capitalism would always maintain the reality of scarcity it needs to thrive, even when technological and scientific process effectively introduced to us a world of universal abundance. "You can't be human or decent without the knowledge to overcome scarcity" he said in one of the many interviews he gave.

Fresco, for me, was a lot like Nikola Tesla, a brilliant mind who's brilliance will only be truly recognized long after his death. When talking about the Venus Project, or the recourse based economy, many people immediately shun away, calling it communism. But it's worse than that, I'm afraid, and therefore it's brilliant. The resource based economy does away with all -isms and all money. This is another thing that's so hard to imagine for many people, but if you take a little time to think about it, he's absolutely right in saying that we don't need money. Economy is the system, the body of rules and regulations we've agreed upon, by which we decide who gets what share of the pie. For this system to stay relevant, the pie can't be too big; the pie has to scarce, it has to be something for us to compete over. If suddenly we realized that there's pie everywhere, that there's more pie available than we could ever hope to be able to consume, all competition and the need for a system of dividing the pie would end.

This scares people. Somehow we've come to believe that if there's no need to compete for our daily bread, suddenly everybody will become lazy, that it would mean the end of progression. This, I think, is an irrational fear, often based on wrong assumptions about communism and socialism, a wrong understanding of evolution and the term "survival of the fittest", or a combination of both. Let me just say this: every important invention or discovery ever made, was made by someone who was extraordinarily curious to find out, or extremely motivated to build one thing. The dreamers and the obsessed, the ones with the means and time to dedicate all their energy to that one goal, they are the ones who invent things we need or want. In capitalism progress is only allowed when it makes money, which is the very reason why we live in this paradoxical world where the reality of abundance, is transformed in the economical necessity of manufactured scarcity.

Jacque Fresco never saw his dream come true. He died in 2017, with America fighting wars in 7 countries, with a thriving prison industrial complex and military industrial complex, with people still addicted to oil and the news full of warnings about the climate and environment. Let us hope that with him, his ideals didn't die also, and that we as a species grow up to understand the validity of his ideas; remove the false manufactured scarcity, provide every human being on Earth with their basic necessities, and almost all our problems will be solved. We really wouldn't need those armies, prisons and taxes anymore.
