The Rise Of The Contrepreneur steemCreated with Sketch.

Hey J-hustlers

The internet has brought about a new age of the entrepreneur, well not really new it's more of an amplified version of what was always there, they now have social validation through metrics like followers and likes to add legitimacy to the garbage they spew online.

I'm talking about the con-artist or as we now label them as, "Contrepreneurs". These guys and girls are all over YouTube, Facebook and Instagram telling you they've figured out the secrets to infinite passive income, starting a successful business or how to take your business to the next level.

All you need to do is pay for their course, attend their seminar or buy their book and the secrets will be right there, they will jump off the page and into your bank account and you'll be a smashing hit with this shortcut to success.

I won't provide names for these people and give them free marketing but you'll know who they are.

Startup culture

Startup culture is such a positive movement, I really am in love with the idea of people wanting to remove themselves from the corporate world and either build their own business to rival it or build a small sustainable business for them to see out their days without having a boss, its an admirable pursuit.

However, this concept has been bastardised by a litany of getting rich quick schemes and growth/business hacks that aren't worth the discounted courses they're printed on. Most of it is either stolen insights copied verbatim from other authors with a metric ton of motivational speeches that don't really provide any value.

I've always felt that talking doesn't get much done and actually doing gets things done. I know for the people selling these courses that is not the case, but they are not producing wealth for the market they are simply regurgitating words and moving money from other peoples pockets to theirs, there's no real cost vs value exchange.

Contrepreneurs feed on Wantrepreneurs

A while back I spoke about wantrepreneurs who are all about looking the part but never actually do anything, they're either living off old money or outright lying about their success to try and build a following which they can later monetise.

We live in a material world where there is absolutely no shortage of money-hungry people wanting wealth without work, there are so many people disillusioned with their current lifestyle that it makes for an endless supply of suckers ready to line up to be gamed.

These Contrepreneurs rely on the mindset of instant gratification and material pursuits by wannabe entrepreneurs to line their pockets. In its purest sense entrepreneurship is about chasing a goal and living something you are passionate about with the profit being a byproduct not the end goal.

I think we've lost sight of that fact and it's not about providing value for your clients it's all about how can I quickly extract money from one another in the shortest amount of time and with the least amount of effort.

This may bring you riches in the beginning but it's not how you will build a sustainable business going forward.

Have you seen these Contrepreneurs ads online? Have you been suckered into buying their content? Let's talk about it.

Have your say

Holla at me in the comments! All my commenters I will now refer to as Jessie. Jessie is a good friend of mine, but Jessies got a girl, and I want to make her mine.

So have at it my Jessies! If you don't have something to comment, simply comment "I am a Jessie."

Good morning @chekohler

Is Contrepreneurs a real word or did you create it? I've never heard such a description before :)

I surely have seen many of those youtubers and some of them do have some valuable content and knowledge to share. It's not that they all are full of BS.

Based on my current experience, most of them seem to actually share their experiences for free and they rely on income from ads or they are hoping to monetize their reach somehow in the future.

Interesting morning read, thx. Upvote on the way.
Cheers,
Piotr

Yes there are plenty of I would call them thought leaders just putting out content for the sake of helping and sharing their experiences and I do check out some of their content but online content is not yet about the merit but how you can present it and how much you can promote it which is why these contepreneurs can do so well selling the prince of instant results it’s the same in forex and crypto trading too

I have checked out your email I’ve been meaning to respond and I will do so shortly I promise

Almost no business has any interest in doing well for their customers only interested in getting that dollar from them.

Sadly I have to agree, there are so few businesses actually trying to give value for money, its all about moving money from one pocket to another

I have definitely run into plenty of these predictors. I have to admit that some of them are convincing. not that I ever paid a single cent to these con-people. it seems the best advice or tips are given out for free, well not exactly but for our attention and that is something far more valuable then money in the long run.

Oh I agree they are very convincing and got the marketing of their product down to a T, Pity the product itself is worth nothing, if they put those efforts behind something real who knows where they could take a business

I think those who offer real advice don’t expect much in return because they’re already so darn successful and passionate they just want to share their info

I think that the universal truths you. Can get anywhere but the things that work uniquely to your situation come from trial and error

100% agree--content marketing has sucked nuance and authenticity from the creation process. Platforms like steem make it so that the content /has/ to speak for itself. The value is intrinsic; the end product doesn't have to whore itself out or bait and switch for lead generation.

I think so too, I still curate my own feeds on YouTube by saving channels that I feel produce authentic content that was well put together

It is pretty hard when you see all the absolute lowest common denominators junk like reaction videos, vlogs, pranks and interviews that are just a waste of time (not saying those content genres can’t be quality) but the vast majority is just there to add content to your channel and grind out views

Hopefully with new platforms like these we can offer a place to reboot it and try again without corporate influence
