Troubles of international waters
Long ago it was considered a "dead" sea but today, the Sargasso Sea, is recognized as "rainforest of the sea". In fact, it is a portion of ocean extremely rich in biodiversity, which acts as an exclusive breeding center for some species such as eels.

Today this important sea is one of the most polluted on the planet, as currents that pass through it and surround it, concentrate plastics and other pollutants in this area, endangering the whole ecosystem. Some countries already expressed themselves in favor to the protection of this sea, by signing a non-binding pact; unfortunately, being international water, the matter is particularly complicated and the will of each individual country is necessary to preserve this place. Now, we can just hope, for the next few months, for the extension of the treaty to other nations, which could be signed already in September during a meeting of the United Nations.
Air pollution and genetic mutations
A new study shows a correlation between the presence of pollutants in the air and the presence of genetic mutations associated with cancer.

That pollution is related to the development of various diseases, including cancer, has long been known. It has now been discovered that the absorption of coarse particulate matter (including metals, like nickel), can cause inflammation in the brain of rats and the appearance of genetic mutations related to the development of certain tumor. An important result, because it allows us to better understand what the damage to health is.
A very thin hard disk
A study published in Science shows how it is possible to use a few layers of atoms of magnetic material to store information. For the moment the prototypes work only at low temperatures.

The hope is that more techniques will be implemented to make them work even in the devices we use daily. With the explosion, in recent years, of high-tech devices, the problem of storing digital information in small physical space has become very important. Using chlorine tri-iodide sheets (ICl3), and exploiting the quantum properties of the electrons (spin), the researchers succeeded in obtaining a great ability to control the flow of current in the material, that is to encode information.

I guai delle acque internazionali
Tempo fa era ritenuto un mare “morto” ma oggi, il Mar dei Sargassi, è riconosciuto come “la foresta pluviale del mare”. Si tratta, infatti, di una porzione di oceano estremamente ricca di biodiversità, che funge da centro riproduttivo esclusivo per alcune specie come le anguille.

Questo importante mare è oggi uno dei più inquinati del pianeta, in quanto le correnti che lo attraversano e lo avvolgono concentrano plastiche e altri rifiuti di scarto proprio in questa zona, mettendo così in pericolo l’intero sistema. Alcuni paesi si sono già espressi a favore della sua tutela firmando un patto non vincolante; purtroppo, trattandosi di acqua internazionali, la materia è particolarmente complicata, in quanto è necessaria la volontà di ogni singolo paese a preservare questo luogo. Non resta che attendere, per i prossimi mesi, l’estendersi del trattato anche ad altre nazioni, che potrebbe essere firmato già a settembre durante una riunione delle nazioni unite.
Inquinamento atmosferico e mutazioni genetiche
Un nuovo studio mostra una correlazione tra la presenza di inquinanti nell’aria e la presenza di mutazioni genetiche associate al cancro.

Ora è stato scoperto che l’assorbimento del particolato atmosferico più grossolano (tra cui i metalli come il nichel), può provocare, nei ratti, un’infiammazione al cervello e la comparsa di mutazioni genetiche correlate allo sviluppo di alcuni tumori. Un risultato importante, perchè permette di comprendere sempre meglio quali siano i danni dell’inquinamento sulla salute.
Un hard disk sottilissimo
Uno studio pubblicato su Science mostra come sia possibile utilizzare pochi strati di atomi di materiale magnetico per immagazzinare informazione, anche se per il momento i prototipi realizzati funzionano solo a basse temperature.

La speranza è che con il tempo vengano implementate delle tecniche per farli funzionare anche nei dispositivi di utilizzo quotidiano. Con l’esplosione dei dispositivi high-tech, negli ultimi anni è diventato di grande importanza il problema dello stoccaggio delle informazioni digitali in uno spazio fisico sempre minore. Utilizzando dei fogli di tri-ioduro di cloro (ICl3), e sfruttando le proprietà quantistiche degli elettroni (lo spin), i ricercatori sono riusciti ad ottenere una grande capacità di controllo sul flusso di corrente nel materiale, riuscendo così a codificare informazione.
