With 30 million tourists in the last five years, Japan is becoming an extremely popular world travel destination, and for good reason, too. The country is simply spectacular in all facets. I would have to think long and hard just to find one negative thing to say.

Japan is currently undergoing extreme tourism prep for the 2020 summer Olympics. Hotels are going up left and right to accommodate for the massive influx of people that will be coming in just one year.

It’s great for the economy and the popularity of the region, but these actions are having severe implications on historical and cultural components of the Japanese society. In order to put these skyrise buildings up to house millions of people, Japan is being forced to make some difficult construction decisions.

There’s not a lot of landmass to utilize, especially in the city. Ancient temples, shrines, and wooden town houses are all being torn down to help accommodate for this massive change. It’s difficult to weigh the options, and many are not happy with the decision, but it’s as if there are no other alternatives at this point. It is certainly changing the landscape of indigenous societal ways, but it is also uncovering ancient artifacts beneath the surface.

Destruction operations have lead to finding several artifacts, ancients vessels, and undiscovered remains beneath several monumental shrines and temples. New construction is quickly underway, but it makes me wonder what else may be hiding beneath the Earth’s surface that we don’t know about. The ground below our feet is a whole new dimension awaiting exploration.
