Well, for one, the store is closed. The lights are off inside and there is no sign in the storefront window indicating the establishment is open for business. The other interesting thing to note, however, is the expensive hand made ceramic crafts - tea mugs, cups, and pots - blatantly out in the open. No coverings, casings, or lock boxes keeping people from coming by and stealing valuable merchandise.

Where in the world have you ever seen this? I can certainly tell you I’ve never seen anything like this where I’m from. This shop was in Tokyo’s Arakawa ward. Japan is commonly known as one of the safest countries with little to no crime. Does this mean crime is nonexistent? Certainly not.

The Japanese people were all brought up with similar origins and common roots instilled from early societal upbringings. There is a sense of respect, order, and decency instilled in all of the people who reside in this country. It amazes me that this shop owner feels safe enough to leave their products out, not having to worry about someone coming by to steal their expensive retail items.

The society boasts a lot of flavor, but what isn’t very common is racial and ethnic disparities. Most of the people in Japan are of Japanese descent. Where I’m from in the US, diverse subgroups comprising the whole population are vastly different from one another. Many people were brought up differently, hence the large variations and trends seen throughout much of the US.

This isn’t a theme in Japan. Similar upbringings have led to a much more cohesive environment. Citizens are law abiding, and things like crime and violence are not very common. Store owners can leave their valuable goods outside without a worry, schoolchildren can walk to school without adult supervision, and pedestrians wait for the cross sign before crossing a busy intersection.

The society in Japan, in my honest opinion, is representative of a model society. Peace, order, detail-oriented, innovative, in the best interest of the overall common good. Tell me another place in the world besides Southeast Asia where this is likely to occur?

Something to truly envy as I cannot think of another place like that in the world. The ability to freely walk and enjoy the community without concern of these perils would be great to come back to as there used to be many places like this.

Times surely have changed. Wouldn’t it be great to walk around without a worry in the world. I feel like reality has turned us to walking around with our tails stuck between our legs ....
