Raising Kids in the 24hour News Cycle

in #kids6 years ago

I had a great four day weekend outdoors camping. Due to camping outside of cell coverage, it was one of the rare instances where I could completely unplug from the internet and the firehose of information I deluge myself with on a daily basis. It was nice to take a break from the never-ending news cycle that seems to mostly be about people disagreeing and fighting with each other.

My kids are not quite old enough to keep in touch with this news cycle, but it's not long in coming. I'm wondering how I will help them manage this firehose of information. Part of me worries they will become cynical and jaded, or just tune it out entirely. Neither of which will be an ideal option. Not to mention you can't exactly protect them from the news as they will hear it from their schoolmates or other peers.

So far the best strategy I can see is to watch the news with them and talk to them about what they see. Help them to think critically about the news and help them learn how to process it. We'll see how it works. Any advice would be welcome in the comments.
