Bark Art By A Bird
My entry to #thealliance’s #killerpix contest. Theme this week is Bark.
A woodpecker called a Yellow Bellied Sapsucker has made these holes in the bark of the Mountain Ash Tree.
I saw this tree, with the intricate design, while walking in the forest behind the house.
Sapsuckers tend to like trees with soft wood as it makes it easier to penetrate.
The holes at the top are larger probably because the Sapsucker has come back a second time to probe and lick the sap.
I’ve noticed these markings mainly on the Mountain Ash trees. Sometimes I will see the holes in a birch tree that is standing dead or infected with a fungus.
Sap is a main food source for the Sapsuckers and they drills holes in certain trees to release the sap and insert their beaks into the holes to probe for the sap. They also eat any insects found under the bark.

Thanks Mike. I’m sure you would get some interesting photos there. 😊
I love this so much. I love that you can tell a wood packer has been very busy... good luck love!
Thank you Liz and for the good luck wishes. ❤️
That really does look like art! :-)
Thanks @bananamemos. The bird has an orderly pecking order. 😊 🍌
That is a very nice shot of the bark @redheadpei. And the woodpecker has a talent too in pecking the holes nicely :)
Thanks @marblely. Woodpecker is quite the artist. 😊
WOW that is so so cool
Thanks @tattoodjay. I thought so too. 😊
There's art out there, but it's our mission to pay attention to little things. I love what that bird did :)
Thanks for stopping by @gabrielatravels. It is an unique art. 😊
This reminds me of an artist but I cannot remember his name to mention! Beautiful 'art' :3
Thanks @poetrybyjeremy!

What a cool capture @redheadpei I have never seen such an artistic pattern made by birds in a tree trunk before. It is a very acceptable form of vandalism, isn't it? (U & R )
Thanks so much Trudee! I appreciate your kindness and support. ❤️
Always a pleasure Joanne. xox
beautiful shot .. never knew they did such patterns
Thanks @shadowspub. Interesting designs they make. 😊
