Question, Why don't men knit???

in #knitting6 years ago (edited)

Tonight we had a powercut, probably the billionth one this year if I am honest.

However at first I was frustrated because being with no electric meant that I was without internet and kind of felt a little lost perhaps I would say. However after a little while and sitting with sultry candle light and listening to the radio, my partner and I began to chat.

I asked about things I would like to think of doing away from the laptop, and even the thought of turning everything off once a month and just chatting, maybe it should be more regular I am not sure.

So then I just came out with it.

"I think I might want to try to knit." I said.

I don't know what made me say it, it just came out without warning. To which my partner replied...

"I used to knit."

I stopped and looked in amazement, I mean he is gay but there is not a feminist thing about him really, he is all tools and wood and hammers and nails, which I am not remotely interested in, until the project is finished and making it look pretty at the end of it.

I mean I was just stunned to listen to him talk about how his grandmother showed him how to knit and that he had a good understanding about it. So then it got me thinking a bit more about it and wondering

So the research began.

Do you know how many male celebrities knit, quite a few and to name some of these would be the following people.

Russell Crowe

So it would seem that when Russell is not acting he takes a fancy to a ball of wool, a couple of sticks and make something wonderful.

David Arquette

Aha it would seem that David even dabbles in the old knitting from time to time, originally taught by his grandmother, and has a keen love of knitting.

Ryan Gosling

Although never photographed it is rumoured that Mr Gosling also partakes in some scarf creation of sorts.

So there you have it just a couple of famous folk who do seem to enjoy this skill, which I do call it skill because I have now taken part in it, as excited as I was I went out and bought some wool and needles.

I raced home in a frenzy to see what wonderful creations that I could come up with.

I enclose my vlog of my current experience in knitting for your pleasure.

In conclusion, it is my belief that knitting was never perceived as a woman's thing. Not at all but after practicing for five hours until you are cross eyed, I can understand from a man's point of view why knitting might not be up to a mans standard.

Which makes me thing was this the ultimate thing that proved a woman's patience over a mans I wonder.

Thanks for reading.

Learning to knit is a long term project, but rewarding. You never forget the first pair of socks you knit - I still have mine somewhere deep in the sock drawer. I wish you luck!

And yes, lots of male knitters - George Lucas, too :)

Knitting is awesome, and therapeutic.Nothing more manly than making your own stuff.

I guess the therapy bit comes later when you master how not to tangle yourself in the process ha ha. Good to see you back.

Great to be back. I found the process of learning it to be therapeutic itself. I have not knitting in years though, and I have thought about picking it back up but I find myself too distracted with bushcrafting as of late.

And thanks, it's great to be back. Some old friends, some new ones.

People in Serbia have a saying that there is something good in every bad thing.
With all inconveniences of the dark put aside, it is socializing to a degree no media can offer. A zest of romance is also to be pointed out, as I presume you had to light the candles. No social media can do what the Chez co. is doing for us!

Looking forward to see your works.

I would have to buy a generator for back up power, either that or drive somewhere that had power. Candle light I can live with, but no internet - unthinkable. Our home broadband went down for two hours last week - it was like the world ended. Youngest couldn't watch his YouTube videos and online games didn't work - he was so appalled. Eldest and the misses couldn't watch the TV because it's all streamed - I pointed out we have a million movies downloaded they could watch but "They have seen them all already" . After 1 hour and 45 minutes they noticed I was sat merrily typing away on my laptop like nothing was wrong, "how have you got Internet then?" - unlimited tethering on my mobile internet package, which also has unlimited data.

My mum and grandma were both knitters, it's fascinating to watch but I know what you mean - you need real patience and concentration to stick with it.
