The 1st October is the National Day of the People's Republic of China.

The People's Republic of China was founded on October 1, 1949 in a ceremony in Tinmenmen Square. The next day, the central government announced that the first of October is the National Day of the People's Republic of China. On National Day, one of two golden weeks begins, and there is debate over which one should stay.

The National Day is celebrated throughout mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao, and a series of government events, including fireworks and concerts, are held. Public spaces, such as the Tiananmen Square, are adorned with special decorations for the occasion, and portraits of former leaders, such as Sun Yat Sen, are presented to the public.

When the National Day is a five-day celebration (examples: 50th Feast, 55th Feast, 60th Feast), large-scale feasts are held in the country, including soldiers in Tiananmen Square. Examples include President Deng Xiaoping in 1984 and Jiang Zemin in 1999.
