A Week of Bizzare Facts, Mostly about Wasps and Other Tiny Creatures | [LEARN & EARN - Week 24]

in #learnandearn5 years ago

Here is my entry for the initiative LEARN & EARN - Week 24, hosted by @brittandjosie.

I decided to change the format a bit not only to save some space (for the images and text) but also because there are some days during the week when I learn about 3 or 4 different things, other days where I chill out and learn nothing. I think it makes more sense this way...

That being said, here are some of the things I've learned.

At the Bottom of the Pacific Ocean, scientists have discovered the remains of nuclear warheads detonated during the Cold War.

Where!? Would you believe if I told you they were inside shrimp-like creatures, 11 kms down the ocean? Of course not. But it's true.

Check out this article at IFLScience.

There is a species of wasp that turn spiders into zombies and scientists have examined exactly how the insects pull off this feat.

Here's an article explaining it in human terms.

More wasp related facts? Why not? I think @wolfhart will enjoy this one.

Scientists are studying a Brazilian species of wasp and they believe the poison of this wasp might be useful in cancer treatment.

Check out the article here which explains that this wasp venom kills cancer cells, but not healthy cells.

Once I started reading about wasps, I couldn't stop... so here's another interesting wasp study.

Scientists have re-engineered the venom from South American wasp in order to kill bacteria at the same time they've kept it nontoxic to human cells. This can lead to a whole new batch of antibacterial drugs.

You can read the whole explanation in this article.

The world’s most venomous animal is the box jellyfish, with enough venom to kill over 60 people. It's also known as the sea wasp. (I kid you not. 🙃 )

Researchers seem to have discovered an antidote to its lethal sting but more tests are needed to confirm it.

Please check out the article here.

− What does an Australian do when he finds a three eyed snake near a town named Humpty Doo?

− He baptises it as "Monty Python"!

Read more about this snake in this article.

Wow! I am impressed by that venomous jellyfish! Never heard of it! Thanks for sharing :)

It sure seems dangerous. 😱
Thanks for stopping by!

Oh, poor snake with it's triple vision.

I didn't know the fact about the remains of nuclear warheads, but now that I do, it's obvious that all the things dumped or detonated in the oceans and in the whole world, eventually end up everywhere and anywhere in the world. We are made of all the bombs of all the wars and all the plastic dumped in to the nature.

We really enjoy destroying the planet, in several different ways. Don't we?
Thanks for you comment, @insaneworks!

Wow! it is incredibly beautiful😍

Nice to hear you liked it!

There is a species of wasp that turn spiders into zombies and scientists.

Well well well, looks like if the MCU ever runs out of material for a new Spiderman antagonist, they could just take a page out of real life's book. lol On the real though, wasps are kind of underrated.

Yes, they are... and when I was a kid, people told me wasps were useless. Well, they don't seem to be that useless now, do they?

That is most interesting so wasps are good for something but am still staying away from them 😊🤪

Yep, they shouldn't be messed with. 😃

@trincowski, interesting and informative articles!

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed them.

Some interesting things you learnt there. That jelly fish though man, some dangerous sh..t. Spider zombies from wasps. Who woulda thought.

I knew they were dangerous, I had no clue they had enough poison to kill a small army! 😶

Thanks for stopping by!
