Review of Tradtional market Goulston

The traditional market in Goulston Street is the perfect place to eat lunch on a budget and when you cant make up your mind. There are many stalls offering various cuisines - Indian, Chinese, Jamaican, Japanese, Mexican and Turkish to name a few.

Some of my favourite dishes include

  1. katsu wrap - This is assembly line at its best. You order, pay and there is one person to put houmus and sauce on the wrap, one to add diced fried chicken katsu, other to add salad and last one to wrap it up. Henry Ford will be delighted to see how much his assembly line has impacted the world. The wrap is big and I have never been able to finish it, and I have a good appetite.
  2. Indian food truck's rice with half daal half chana - They have a seating area for customers. 4 pounds for a big portion of daal and rice, 5 for chicken curry. they also have some snacks and I dont recommend the naans.
  3. Gozleme - Turkish stuffed bread. I think for 3 or 3.50, this is the best lunch option here. Chicken one is the best, imo.
  4. curry goat and rice at jamaican stall - slightly more expensive than other stalls but worth it.

Shops to avoid -

  1. Mexican - The burrito is really bad. Salsa is aweful and there isn't any flavour.

  2. jerk chicken and rice - i really like jerk chicken but cold sauce on chicken is not worth paying for.

The other options are all ok, falafel wrap, paella, burgers etc. Dumplings are cheap but one can question the authenticity.

So, decent place to come to if you want to eat on a budget. No nonsense food, great quantity, and perfect price. Oh, and there is a very nice coffee place nearby called nude coffee roasters. After you're done with lunch, go there for a nice coffee.
