An old lady with a walking stick rammed her car into a fence ........... she obviously panicked!

in #life5 years ago

This little unfortunate accident made the news in the community recently. We had a very social friend drop by to fill us in on the gossip. Ken is one of those older gentlemen who enjoys helping out anyone who needs help and who knows everything that goes on.

"Did you hear the news of the old lady crashing into the fence? Instead of putting her foot not the brake she stepped on the accelarator with full force, ran over a wheel bin, sped over the road at a great speed and hit the fence hard. Thank goodness she went in between the trees. This old lady did not get hurt, a bit shaken only and here she was with her walking stick wondering how it all happened. The police came and I think now she will be assessed as to whether she can continue driving."

We all decided she would not be driving again!

Drivers panicking and crashing into homes actually occurs a fair bit. The culprits are not always the older senior, they are people who are drunk, on drugs and who go to sleep at the wheel. What a terrible shock for anyone to have a vehicle come crashing through a wall into one's home or through glass into a shopping centre or restaurant. There was a terrible incident here in Australia when a car rammed into a Day Care Centre and injured children. In all cases the foot is on the accelerator!

I don't see any solutions here, these people choose to drive when they obviously should not. This is about social responsibility and making sensible decisions. I wish there was some way to stop them!

Cheers

Unfortunately there aren't ways to stop them. I guess we now understand when they say sometimes common sense is not so common. Glad the lady is well, definitely shouldn't be driving after this incident.

Absolutely right - the sense to know when it is time to stop driving.

On a related note, on boats sometimes the gear wire break. The main purpose of a gear on a boat is to be able to switch between forward, neutral and reverse. Now a boat has no brakes, and the gear is mostly used in harbour situations, typically using the reverse gear for breaking the boat - so one gives speed in order to break the boat - if the gear cable breaks one gets forward speed rather than reverse speed. The common panic reaction then is to give even more speed!

Happened with me once, luckily with the soft RIB dhingy - and yes, I did manage to speed up even more before I understood what was wrong.

How interesting @tobixen, the panic feeling is not a pleasant one.

howdy angiemitchell! well this is another reason for self-driving cars!

I suppose it is janton, but I am not sure about sitting dong nothing, lol.

I would enjoy just looking at the scenery or reading, I think we'll get used to it, I hope so because it's only a few years away!
