Depression: The Deadly Mental Illness

According to National Institute of Mental Health:

Depression (major depressive disorder or clinical depression) is a common but serious mood disorder. It causes severe symptoms that affect how you feel, think, and handle daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working.

Last week has been a big shock to both fashion and television industry. In a span of 2 days, two big people have lost their precious lives because of DEPRESSION. A very well know brand owner, Kate Spade, and a very well-known Chef/Author in the television, Anthony Bourdain, committed a suicide leaving their family, friends, career, fame and money. Yes, I included the last three factors to let you all know that, these things, won’t matter if you have a serious mental illness.

When the death of Kate Spade was announced, many famous artists, showed their grief and sadness to what happened. Personally, I love her brand and owning some of her items made me so sad. But my sadness didn’t end there. Yesterday afternoon, I came to know the death of Anthony Bourdain. And to mention it again, both personalities committed suicide this week. Sir Bourdain committed suicide and he is 61 years old. Depression has become a very terrifying illness that anyone can face. And this is not a joke. Everyone should stop laughing about this issue as this illness is as deadly as any other critical illnesses.

Depression Exempts No One

As what we have watched and see in the news and Social Media, we can conclude that depression exempts no one. Either you are young or old, male or female, famous or not, rich or poor, successful or not, this sickness will not exempt anybody. And it is sad to see very often that a person or a student committed suicide as they can no longer take the feeling of sadness, unimportant, lowliness, loneliness. As a human being living in this world, we should be very vigilant to our friends, families or strangers as we never know what they are going through.

1. Be Nice

A person may be seen very happy but we do not know deep inside what they are going through. In both personal or in social media, we should be sensitive to what other feels. If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all.


2. Don’t Be A Bully

Most teenagers committed suicide due to bullying. And you do not want to become a murderer, or you do not want to be the reason why a person chooses to end his life because of your cruelty. Remember, you are given this life to give light and love to everyone.


And if ever you find your self in deep sadness and sorrow, be strong!

1. Have Faith

I’ll be telling you a true to life story of a man who decided not to end his life after he spoke to his brother. Facing himself on the 12th floor of the balcony, a guy called his older brother and told him he’s going to jump out of the building. But to his brother’s words, convinced him not to end his life.

His brother said: “If you end your life your own way, during the final judgment, we will not see each other in heaven. Mom, Dad, our other siblings won’t be able to see you in heaven.”

Those were the only words that his older said to him but it convinced him to continue his life. Imagine, if he didn’t call his brother, he could have jumped out of the building. Being reminded of your faith will help you through a lot. Never stop believing!


2. Communicate

Communication is a very effective tool to ease depression as this means someone has empathize with you and someone cheers you. Telling someone about what you feel is a very good step so you can seek guidance. There's no more comforting that being able to communicate what you really feel. I know, having this kind of illness, opening up to someone about this condition would be very tough as you are afraid to be judged. But let me tell you, communication is everything. Talk to your close friends, family or seek professional assistance.


3. Love Yourself

Remind yourself every single day that without you, this world wouldn’t be better. You are a gem, an expensive work of art, and a beautiful creation of the Almighty and you deserve to be happy. You deserve to be Joyful. You deserve to love and be loved. You deserve to breathe the same air everyone is breathing. You deserve to be successful and most of all, you deserved to live. You are here for a reason. Never forget you are everything in this world.


It’s Okay To Be Sad But Don’t Dwell On It

Depression is a tough battle against yourself. And in case you find yourself not able to cope up with it, always remind your self of how good life is. I know, things have been very tough. Some people leave but many have stayed. Cry if you must. Embrace the sadness and the pain so that it loses its power. But remember, do not dwell on it forever. Always remind yourself that pain, sadness, and grief are temporary and you can make it through. Fighting! You can do it!
