What Makes Us Want To Become Friends With Someone?
We humans, being the social creatures that we are, like being in the company of other people. We thrive by building newer and better relationships, sharing moments of joy, and helping each other in bad times.
It's true that the people that we choose to hang out with, or become friends with, tells us a lot about who we are as a person and in what way we see ourselves or want to see ourselves.
Friendships that we hold on to for long enough become our family, and that's why as we get older, we become super conscious about who we let into our lives and who we want to befriend.
That raises a question of what exactly is it that makes us want to befriend someone? Well, it's certainly not just one thing in particular; there can be numerous reasons to want to make someone your friend.
Common Interests
One of the fastest ways people, especially over the Internet, find and make new friends is by meeting other people who like the same things they do. It can be the same genre of movies, music, hobbies, similar list of favourite games, or books.
The reason behind this is that we think if the other person likes the same things that we do, there must be some qualities in that person that are similar to ours. In simple words, we look for people in whom we see a reflection of our own self.
Emotional Support
Friendships are, at their very core, based on human emotional needs. We need friends to have fun in life and not feel lonely and isolated. We need friends for emotional validation and reassurance when we're feeling helpless and unloved.
As independent as the modern society wants to be, it's true that friendships are an important part of our overall well-being. A group of close friends is just as important as financial stability and physical wellness, if not more.
Appealing Personality
Sometimes, we want to become friends with someone regardless if they share common interest with us or are emotionally available for us. This is when charm and appealing personality comes into play.
Confidence and honesty are qualities that are just irresistible for us humans. Even though some people may not be like us, we still want to become friends with them for the simple reason being that they're just too appealing to not pay attention to.
