The Fight Between Film And Music

in #life5 years ago (edited)

Yesterday was the first day of the rest of my days in Steemit. This saying is from a movie, I don't remember which but is related to the subject today.

Yesterday I decided to use my passions and hobbies to find themes for my posts and try to avoid the popular challenges used by most of us. I don't know how much time I'll be able to do this.

Yesterday I posted about my love for music ... today about movies. It has always been a struggle in me to decide what my first passion is, music or movie. They alternated in my heart. I chose the #life the first tag, it may seem exaggerated, but for me the music and the movie mean life.

The second great passion is film!

The film was the great escape from a bad reality. As I said, adolescence, youth, and part of the maturity I spent in communism. For who does not know what communism means ... communism was a totalitarian society in which people were deprived of elementary rights. The culture of other countries was almost forbidden, and it was very hard to see how life is beyond the borders of the country. The film was the only way to be informed about the world. Most of the movies I could see were films from other communist countries. Fortunately, these movies were high quality, art movies, cult movies.

I have to admit, I was lucky about the movies. I do not know why, many American films and from all over the world have come to communist Romania. I had what to see. I've seen many hundreds of movies, I can say I was a cinematic!

In Bucharest and in the big cities in Romania there were some kind of movie libraries where many art films could be seen. Many times I watched movies all day, in a single day they played 7-8 different films. It was difficult and tedious to see so many movies, but it was particularly beautiful. Exciting and interesting were then meetings with friends and discussions about the movies seen. All of this made us sort of film specialists and especially passionate about art films, commercially unsuccessful films but experimenting with new ways of expression and communication.

My favorite film comes from that time, the 1960s. It's about Blow-Up, a film by Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni. The film was made in London and shows the beginning of the beat era, the angry and rebellious young people against a conservative society. Beginning of rock music, pop art, fashion and photography.

In a few words, this is the movie:
Thomas, a fashion photographer, finds something very suspicious in the photos he took in a park. While photographing remotely, a loving couple finds something odd in the girl's attitude. After developing the pictures he understands that he shot a crime ...

There will be more posts about this movie, I will present different parts in my own way. Now I will start with the end! The end of the movie is impressive. Antonioni shows the evolution of the main character, Thomas ... actually his involution from action to renunciation. From leaving reality for somewhat imaginary existence.

Director imagined this waiver by a game of tennis without ball ... a tennis game made by a group of young people in the same park where Thomas photographed the crime.

A group of exuberant and seemingly carefree young people, the new generation.

Of course, a show that can not be missed. Thomas had just come to the park to find the body of the man killed. He has found nothing, no sign that something has happened there. He already wondered if he was real or just in his imagination.

Exuberance and carefree. These people were living in another world in another dimension. Thomas, who had discovered a crime by taking pictures, a crime in his photos, came to see that he was not mistaken. He did not find the body, and now he was not sure the crime really happened. Now the tennis mimed match pushes him even further into confusion.

Thomas, the photographer, gets involved in the game and gives up reality. This is what the director wants to express by including Thomas in that group of young people.

He picks up the imaginary tennis ball and throws it back, he realizes that what he saw (or thinks he saw) in the park the day before is none of his concern. It's as if that never happened.

A good friend who knew this was my favorite movie wanted to see it. After watching it, he told me he didn't like it at all and didn't understand who the killer was. I mean, he showed he didn't understand anything, the killer doesn't really matter in the story.

I saw this film for the first time in 1970. I don't know by what miracle it has come to communist Romania. He was censored, all the scenes that were not admitted by communist ideology were cut. There have been many. I saw the movie eleven times in a row because I knew it would disappear from the cinemas very quickly. Now I have it on DVD but I rarely look at it. This movie was great in his time and my time, long time ago.

Thank you very much!

Sounds like a fabulous blend of existentialism and absurdism. What is real perhaps does not always have to demand our attention. If Thomas does go to the police with what he has photographed, the joy will certainly go out of his life. Perhaps it is better to play act reality instead. Clever concept for a piece of cinema.

Yes, I agree with you...
