You're Alive, and You're Going to Die. How Are You Numbing Yourself to That?

Almost no one is willing to live. No one wants to face that they're alive. To face that you're alive means to face that you're gonna be dead. The more fully you're alive, maybe the scarier it is to think about dying. Everyone just wants to numb, to stay at baseline.

I look around and I see people doing it in almost everything they do:

Work

People drown themselves in chores and responsibility and schedules. It doesn't take that much energy to wake up every day at the same time, go to the same job, and follow the same routine. Stay really busy and occupied, and you never have to think about the fact that you're alive and you're going to die and you're made up of billions of cells that are made of infinite space working in harmony to make your life possible--never have to think about the fact that you haven't made a real human connection in fifteen years, that your back is hurting and screaming that something's off, that your relationship with your spouse has become a comfortable yet lonely agreement.

Weekends?

Substances!

Ohhhhh boy, this is a big one. This is one I didn't used to be aware of. I thought I felt more alive when I drank alcohol. Nope. Alcohol does a nice job of numbing you out. It impedes your clarity and life energy. It helps numb you to the fact that you're alive and breathing and you're infinite intelligence focused into a miraculous universe you call your human body... that's going to die some day. Could be any day.

Spirituality

Many spiritual events are really low energy. It's because people want to numb themselves out so they don't feel alive. They want to float on a cloud free from emotions.... free from themselves.... free from life.

You know, this is quite an adventure we're on -- quite a vacation to planet earth. It's quite miraculous and magical even that you can experience emotion. What are emotions? Being a human is a fucking trip. If you'll stop numbing yourself to it, you're in for a cosmic adventure on a floating ball in empty space.
