Jackie Chan’s Green Heroes

Have you watched “Jackie Chan’s Green Heroes”? I’d preset it to record some time back but didn’t have time to watch it until today. Boy, am I glad I recorded it!

I’d read about how humble Jackie Chan is but I didn’t know how concerned he was for our planet, for our children’s future. He has a conscience and regrets all the damage his action movies have done to the environment. So now he wants to make amends, and in his own words, to redeem himself.

He watched documentaries on environmental issues and found Arthur Huang, “a structural engineer, architect, innovator of loop economy building material solutions and specialized in post-consumer trash recycling applications to help to accelerate the shift to a close-loop economy” source

Jackie and Arthur co-created the Trashpresso, “a unique factory on wheels, which can turn waste plastic into multi-use tiles on-site - even at the top of the world - the Tibetan Plateau.”

But how can it work where there is no energy supply? Solar panels!

Plastic is fed into the machine where it is shredded, washed and dried. Where do they get their water supply? The water they use is recycled and is all they need! The shredded plastic is put into metal molds and baked to make tiles! Genius!

They educated the community, especially the children, on plastic polution. Then Jackie led the children to collect the plastic waste around them and the team taught them how to use the Trashpresso. They then glued the tiles onto a wall.

The action hero said that he wanted to use his fame to spread the message, that everyone could be a “green hero” if they just act.

The whole concept and how it was executed was really awesome and inspiring. I immediately went to YouTube to see if I could actually melt and mold plastic in a conventional oven. Guess what? It can be done with HDPE plastic! Will this be my new project in the near future? It will depend on how much HDPE plastic I can collect 😉

Looks like you may be plastic smithing after all ;)

It is really good how people can just come together to collaborate on such a project! Hope more people will go green :)
