Defeat depression with progress

in #life6 years ago (edited)

While I'm not an expert on depression I am human and have some opinions on what can be done to break out of a depression for anyone who happens to be in one. The main method I use to avoid going into depression is to focus on progress. Progress can take any form on any level or for any focus. If attention is focused on for instance learning a new language then it would be important to track progress and strive to make continuous improvements to current comphrehension and communication ability over time. If we are talking about physical fitness then progress can be tracked in a journal or a spreadsheet and the principle behind fitness progress is essentially progressive overload. Volume may be tracked and may increase over time and body composition can be tracked (lean body mass vs fat mass) to determine if progress is being made there.

In any area of life there may be room to make improvements or upgrades which can be made to the current position or state. To me to be depressed is to be in a state where I stop tracking progress and stop pursuing improvements. If I simply settle for where I'm at and what I have then to me that is the cause of depression because without progress we simply get older and deteriorate over time. To get stronger requires effort, focus, and determination. To get better at something requires discipline and to find out if I'm better I must track my gains and my losses. This goes for anything whether financial, physical, or mental.

My final advice: Never give up on yourself and always seek to improve your life in any way POSSIBLE.

Hope and faith may help prevent depression (in my case), but I knew another person whom had depression, and despite being more intelligent and successful than I, and despite my preaches of hope in progress, he eventually killed himself.
He even blamed me for it, which showed me that he knew that suicide is bad and hinted me that he wanted to live, which proved to be a false hint eventually, despite my fuzzy logical derivations.
Progress gives me hope and my faith is in truth and the revelations of truth.
Progress is the discovery of truth and methods for improvement.
I believe that diseases that are currently not curable will be curable and it gives me hope.
I believe that technologically impossible feats will be possible and it gives me hope.
But my experience taught me that it does not work for everyone.

No one can blame anyone else for decisions to end their own life in my opinion. As an adult if someone makes that decision then they are solely responsible for that choice. My opinion on suicidal depression is if it gets that bad there are professionals that should be contacted. If you're a friend to a person who expresses thoughts of suicide you should contact professionals who can handle that kind of situation. At the very minimum you should nag your friend and tell them to call the help lines or seek professional help.

In many cases people can be helped. My blog post is more about the non-life threatening mild forms of depression which most people are familiar with. I have no personal experience with suicidal tendencies as I've never felt that way so any advice I can give on that topic would be useless. Only professions can help there in my opinion.

I did not report him, because I feared that he and others will be afraid to talk to me due to framing him (damage to my real life reputation)
I also assumed that he was not going to do it, due to what I wrote before and due to other reasons.
IDNK if he blamed me officially in a suicide letter, but he explicitly told me that I make him want to die.
My guess for the reason why is my antitheist preaches, but I never hinted or claimed that he should die.
I told him the opposite and he was one of a few that I wanted to live.
I knew another person before him that had depression, but he was aware of it, took medications, and today he is an examplery brain dead zombie with will to live.
In his case it is still better than death, I guess.
Due to this other person, I assumed that the one whom killed himself would not do it either, but I did told him once that if he is serious about it, he should go to a psychiatrist, despite that I knew about psychiatry quite the same of what I know about it now, that it is legalized drug trade, policy of enslavement and care instead of cure.
In a few acute cases even this is better than death.

I think in most cases psychiatry is over prescribed but in situations where lives are at stake then whatever can help should be tried. Some people do need help from professionals and other people need to learn how to help themselves without any medication.

The problem with psychiatry is it diagnoses everyone as needing medication even when they aren't suicidal, or aren't a danger to others. In my opinion the standard should be a lot higher than it is but like you said it's always better to be alive in treatment than to be dead. If the options are dire then work within that context.

As far as reputation goes, if a friend is threatening suicide it's actually good for my reputation if I report them or tell them to seek help. It's worse for my reputation if I don't tell them to seek help so my standard response for anyone who tells me about thoughts of suicide is first to tell them to seek help and if they keep expressing those thoughts to me then to take steps to report them.

Why? It's because I'm not qualified to help a person who has that problem and because of that the best outcome is if they seek a professional. Professionals also from a legal liability point of view are covered if they do commit suicide.

People often stay in stagnation because they do not change their variables before pursuing what they want in a different context, and so they get the same outcome. Yep, like you said... always seek to improve.

We all have periods in our life where we stall or have setbacks or regress. The point is to identify it when it's happening and then take a step forward. It could be as simple as deciding to eat healthy for the first time, or as simple as deciding to read a book a week. Anything which can being positive progress to your life is a step forward.

it's much easier to survive depression, if you have close friends and friends, not just they are, but they love you, and they will always support you if you, in your opinion, have a black streak in life. I have a bad mood, but rarely comes to depression, because I have many loved ones. And of course there is absolutely no time to be in a depressive state. I just sometimes sometimes have to think about my condition, and sometimes I do not even notice a good mood or a bad one =) to go through the day as one minute, studying, working, helping my parents, and so on. So the day passed, I paint in the evening, or I do my homework, then the course exams. Maybe I was depressed, but I did not have time to understand that I had it. Sometimes I just do not want to do anything, I just want to sit in a quiet, so that no one disturbs my peace, I want to feel a little weak, even let a tear. But simply there is no time. Fortunately, or unfortunately ?? what is your opinion :)))

If you are doing what you want to do with your time, spending on things you want to spend it on, then there is no problem. Time well spent is time well spent. I don't know enough to form an opinion and it's not really my life so I have no business forming one.
