Organized and risk free workplace with 6S(methodology), Part-4, Seiso

Seiso is the 3rd step of 6S methodology. Earlier we reviewed ‘Seiri’ and ‘Seiton’ which you will find here and here. ‘Seiri’ and ‘Seiton’ means ‘sort’ and ‘set in order’ respectively. Today we are going to review about Seiso which means ‘shine’. To be more accurate, to make everything shiny and clean.

In the Seiso process, first you have to identify which items are required to clean. Then prepare the list of the items and mention the frequency of the cleanness. After making list, you will find some of the items like working desk, sensitive equipment, floor, washroom etc are required to clean every day, even many times in a day. On the other hand, some of the items are required to clean once in a week or in a month.

Shine/Sweep (Seiso)
3S – cleanliness point with cleaning tools and resources.
Seiso is sweeping or cleaning and inspecting the workplace, tools and machinery on a regular basis.
Goals:
· Prevent deterioration.
· Keep the workplace safe and easy to work in.
· Keep the workplace clean and pleasing to work in.
· When in place, anyone not familiar to the environment must be able to detect any problems within 50 feet in 5 sec.
Implementation:
· Clean the workplace and equipment on a daily basis, or at another appropriate (high frequency) cleaning interval.
· Inspect the workplace and equipment while cleaning

Dirtiness always enhance the risk of accident and frequent breakdown of equipment that directly affects the productivity. Therefore, it is mandatory part to be maintained properly to increase the productivity and revenue.

If you want to implement 6S process in your workplace or at home, you have to maintain the Seiso process properly. Clean and tidiness is also a part of good health. Therefore, apart from productivity and revenue we need to think about this process to maintain our good health.
