Three Things That Might Be Gone Soon

At first glance, Mexican porpoises, stoves, and the influenza virus have little in common. But with a title suggesting that the three subjects of this post may disappear in the not-too-distant-future, you are becoming more interested. At least two of these things, stoves and the influenza virus, seem to be fixtures in our lives, right?

If you had told me even a year ago that stoves are an endangered species and may someday be replaced in most peoples’ homes, I would have laughed. But technology has rendered other dependable institutions (like bookstores) nearly obsolete, so why not the stove? As far as the influenza virus, again, it is part of life. Sometime during a typical winter, many of us are pretty much guaranteed to get a dose of either the common cold or some seasonal flu.

And then there’s that Mexican porpoise. They are critically endangered, as you will read soon. In fact, let’s move onto that part of the story next: you reading about all of these things. Enough with introductions. I’m now done with the part where I tell you what I’m going to tell you and am proceeding to the part where I am telling it to you straight.

Vaquitas are Disappearing Quickly

Many animal species are endangered, meaning they face the danger of becoming extinct. Critically endangered animals are those whose viability on Planet Earth hangs by a string. None fits this category any better than the poor Vaquita, a kind of Mexican porpoise that lives in the Gulf of California (a.k.a. Sea of Cortez). At last official count (more than a year ago), there were only about 30 vaquitas left in the world and their numbers are dwindling quickly, possibly already in the range of just 12-15 animals remaining.

The main culprit is illegal fishing. Vaquitas are the smallest porpoise/dolphin in the world, just 4-5 feet (135-140 cm). They only produce one offspring every other year. Vaquitas are rarely are seen above water, but they get caught really easily in gill nets (fishing nets). The Mexican government had an opportunity to step in and combat the problem, tackling illegal fishing in the Gulf to help this species to survive longer. But we are probably past the point of viability now and it seems likely that this porpoise will become extinct within a few years.

There are other critically endangered animals in the world. For most of them, habitat loss is the biggest reason why. Throw in pollution, a warming planet, invasive species, and a few more things that humans have tweaked. Those would probably explain why.

Stoves

Let’s move on to something more uplifting. Do you really need a stove to cook anymore? A number of top restaurants have taken out their stoves. What is the alternative? No, they are not using microwave ovens, which probably would not earn them any Michelin stars.

The alternative is the equivalent of a portable, single burner hot plate. But this kind probably is not responsible for as many house fires as the gas burners. And anyway, as I think I mentioned, top restaurants are relying on it.

The device is an induction plate. It’s not new and it’s not rocket science. People have been using these for more than a decade. But now, there is a commercial product that is replacing stoves in these fancy restaurants.

It hangs on the wall like those magnetic racks for pots and pans. Space is freed up for other cooking activities or whatever you want to do with that counter or tabletop space. And then – Presto! – you pull it down, cover it with a pot or pan, and cook what you want before stowing it once again.

Potential issues might include ventilation because putting these just about anywhere may spread cooking smells and stains to just about anywhere. There are claims that it’s attractive, but I don’t think that it is; maybe Disney could do something design-oriented that involves mouse ears. Also, some chefs don’t like electric because they love their gas stoves. But aside from those concerns, perhaps there is no reason that these could not expand to residential applications in the near future. The space saving feature would have plenty of fans for sure.

Influenza

Killer T-cells, peptides, chimeric hemagglutinin…for perhaps the first time ever, there are MULTIPLE promising vaccines that have reached Phase 3 studies, each of them have different attack strategies. The goal is a universal flu vaccine, one that prevents all forms of the disease. And it seems like one may be within reach in the coming years.

Influenza kills a number of people every year and weakens many others who must take time out from their lives to deal with the illness. The current vaccines are imperfect partly because the medical authorities must plan to vaccine well in advance. They can only guess at which actual strains of flu will be dominant by the time the vaccine gets rolled out.

A universal flu vaccine would attack all kinds of this disease. Can you imagine taking one shot and not getting the flu again anymore? It could be possible. Between stoves, Mexican porpoises, and the flu, I know which one I’d like to eliminate in the future.

EDIT, March 6, 2019: Today, the LA Times reported that the Mexican government announced that 22 Vaquita porpoises remain. https://www.latimes.com/world/la-fg-mexico-vaquita-porpoises-20190306-story.html

An interesting message, I think I know what thing you would like to eliminate in the future - this is the flu, I completely agree with you. At present, all diseases are mutated (I think because of our deplorable ecology) and it is not known how the flu can manifest itself. There are many cases of death.

it would be interesting to know how a universal flu shot might work - against all flu strains ?? @angrytwin

Yes, please visit the link to the article I referenced there in The Scientist. It basically explains how each of them work.

"...some chefs don’t like electric because they love their gas stoves."

The very same method of providing burners can be used with braided steel gas lines.

Thanks!

Yes, I'm sure if this catches on, then we'd probably see some gas models also.

I think I will stick with having an induction stove top, if only for the aesthetics. :) The induction plate isn't going to replace my oven, and its not wasting any space to have the stove top on top really...

Flu Vaccine... Id be happy with one that wasn't made in an egg.

Yes, the egg thing is really inefficient.

It is also the source of a lot of the variability that results in it having low efficacy.

Eliminating the common cold and the flu would be an excellent feat, as you tell us yourself, this type of illness causes us to become quite weak and depends on how strong it can be. With regard to household appliances, the technology that is constantly advancing can always find any kind of investment that can replace current methods and with regard to the danger of extinction of species is very tragic, the same human being has taken care of this and I think it is very regrettable.

Yes, the question in my mind after reading about the flu is, "Can they do the same with the cold also?" Perhaps some of the same techniques could apply to both, though I know the common cold actually is a series of many different viruses.

Hello Friend how are you?
No doubt the flu I would like it to disappear forever, the stoves may disappear by much more sophisticated devices as you show us, but many people will always prefer your stove, the porpoises, these little dolphins, should not disappear they do not hurt to nobody.

Very interesting this topic today, sometimes we are so busy in our things and we do not realize that around us are happening amazing things, I always like to read your post!

You synthesized it all very well there.

A very sad story is that Mexican porpoises are on the verge of extinction. The most important fact is that people are accustomed to live in their own pleasure and not pay attention to what is happening around and even more so to take care of the environment. Naturally, this affects a large number of animals and mammals. While someone is filling their pockets with money in the world, rare species of birds, plants and animals are dying out. The whole world is going crazy, few people think about the future of our planet, people think that they will live their lives and what will happen next this does not concern them. It's sad to see how a planet dies, planet earth is angry at people and sends hurricanes, tornadoes and other global catastrophes and destruction, we need to understand that this is a sign and a hint to people that they need to start making the world better and take care of our planet. Even if small, but kind and useful actions are already a result. I think our ancestors would be very angry with us when they built this world and they would like something to develop for the better, but alas, today everything is just worse and worse.

Thanks for the interesting post, these are really painful topics, but they need to be discussed!

Yes there are some people that get outraged about animal species dying off and yes we should do better in protecting the environment where we can. There transitioning to homes with no stoves I think would take a long while, but I also think that they would be adopted faster by those people that live in cities where space is at a premium!

Sometimes i wonder at the power of tecnologhy. Many years back, there was no stove, few years ago there was only stove, now there is stove and much better equipment and few years to come there will be no.more stove to talk about. The way tecnology is changing the world, sometimes i sit down and i wonder what will be this world in the next 15 years to come. How would it look like

In my opinion influenza viruses will not be extinct ... even more developed. I hate it when I get an influenza virus.
