Manzanillo, the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, Day 6

Manzanillo is about 20 minutes from the border of Panama on the east coast. This is known as the Caribbean side of the country.

The last part of our shuttle ride into Manzanillo had our hearts racing fast! It had been dark for awhile and we were going further and further into the jungle. We had booked an Airbnb and our instructions were to honk at the gate and the property would come out to greet us.

The property manager indeed came out to help us with our bags. He spoke no English but was very friendly. He led us through a gravel yard and then down an unlit path. The experience felt similar to getting into a campsite in the dark except we were in Central America. Luckily every few feet a motion light would pop on. Once we got into our house and turned on the lights we felt better.

Once we were settled the property manager who we think was named Fernando, came and asked us if we were hungry. I lied and said no, but my mom said yes. Fernando offered to drive us to the Super to get some groceries. We hopped in his car, my mom in the front, and me in the back with his machete case tied to the back of his seat rest.

We safely made it back and on our way to the little house I took a picture with all the lights on. It would have made us feel better if the first time we saw it the light were turned on!

The first night was surprisingly cold. It was cold and very damp cause it was raining. The only plus side to the rain is that it settled down the bats and the howler monkeys which were out of control loud. My mom and I slept in the same room the first night cause she wanted some morale support which mostly meant I got to laugh every time she said something like "this is insane" or "how did I get here?"

Waking up was truly amazing. The picture below as well as the image of the steps next to the jungle is what we saw when we got out of bed.

While we were enjoying coffee in our jungle oasis Fernando came by to let us know monkeys and toucans were in the trees in the front of the property. My mom had mentioned wanting to see monkeys so it was super kind of him to come get us. Can you spot them?

After seeing the monkeys we decided to go back and relax on the hammocks and take it easy for the day. We had bought all the groceries we needed the night before so we were all set.
