Why are accusations of hypocrisy even worse than hypocrisy itself?
When you accuse a person of hypocrisy, you think that you are punishing him for doing wrong.
But actually you are punishing him for the right position.
How is that? Now I will tell you on example.
Imagine that a person tells you how he worries about the environment. But then you see how this person, along with other people, drinks coffee from a disposable cup.
You come up and say to him: "You care about the environment, but why do you use disposable tableware!?".
He replies to you: "But everyone drinks!"
You continue: "But what about the ECOLOGY?!".
And everyone around begins to laugh at this man. What should he feel? What conclusion should he draw?
The conclusion that he should not drink from disposable glasses? But you didn’t punish him for that. Other people drank too, but they got away with it.
The conclusion that you can’t talk about good and right things, such as caring for the environment? Yes, that sounds more like the truth.
Because if he was silent about his position (by the way, absolutely correct and useful), he would not be in an awkward situation.
That is why accusations of hypocrisy always arouse my dislike. If you blame a person for this in order to blame, then you do not do any service to society, and even vice versa.
You forbid people to have ideals that are better than themselves. You condemn them for the fact that their morality is ahead of them, and not sadly trailing behind.
