The Uncomfortable Truth About "DLive"

in #life5 years ago (edited)

I recall it like it was yesterday. Regarded as one of the most trusted and treasured developmental projects on our blockchain, DLive could do no wrong. Even after a brief problematic spell where they allegedly lost their private keys to an unknown third party who then went on to upvote themselves a tidy little sum, the community as a whole simply brushed it to one side as an unfortunate mishap. Again, they could do no wrong. And understandably so as the DLive platform was incredibly well put together and a welcome addition for us all. A slick interface, in-built chat functionality and friendly, personable staff members.

After which, we got the bombshell that shocked the community to it's core. They were moving away and starting over on a brand new and unheard of blockchain, whilst releasing a joyful, almost whimsical post proclaiming their departure. In the following few hours, their two million SP delegation was swiftly pulled and virtually every Steemian ran them off the platform before they even had a chance to voluntarily leave themselves. Fast forward to today and things look very different indeed...

As anyone even remotely involved in the crypto space must be fully aware of by now, Dlive have bagged themselves a veritable goldmine in the form of the one and only PewDiePie. Although this doesn't come as much of a shock to me seeing as he himself has been getting his own personal social media related grief as of late, so it stands to reason he'd be looking to make some dramatic and bold move such as this. Nobody knows this for sure, but speculation is rife of a undisclosed huge sum exchanged between himself and DLive, which I'd say is pretty much obvious, to say the least. But anyways, it is what it is and DLive have been capatulted into the spotlight overnight. My thoughts?

Well, let's rewind a little, shall we? Back to when they made that fateful post declaring their departure from the STEEM blockchain. Bottom line is, they were always free to do as they wished. Just like any user of any platform out there. No one is contractually obliged to stay with any app. Hence regarding blockchain, the underlying mechanic of relationships lies with trust and reputation. And that's what they built up to the highest degree possible with the STEEM community. It's just the "way" they left that angered us. Had they been more vocal before hand with their issues regarding STEEM to the point where the team indicated they might eventually leave, I'm sure wheels would have been in motion to either find a solution to the problem or alternatively, let them call it quits. All cards would have been on the table from both sides. But after accumulating a crap load of STEEM to then suddenly haul ass and essentially pass in on to another blockchain, didn't look great for them, no matter how you try to dress it up.

So during the time they'd left, most were still aware that they were continuing in operation but on the lowdown. Until the big announcement a few days back. Now, I guess it's pointless achieved something beyond any of our wildest dreams. Therefore, I'm more looking at the bigger picture. Remember that this is crypto and everything in this space is still very experimental by nature. It's like a kid has been handed a brand new toy and is trying to figure out how it works and what it does. Every crypto out there, even Bitcoin, is finding it's feet. So what we need is more eyes on the space as a whole and positive skewed disruptive events like PewDiePie's involvement in crypto, can only be a good thing for everyone. We need the tongues wagging and interest growing. Celebrities have that power, especially if you jump to the top of the food chain like DLive have done. Yes, their seemingly underhanded approach to leaving us last year was, on the face of it, traitorous and two-faced. But I now feel enough time has passed to put all our differences aside and see the entire crypto space flourish instead of simply individual projects. Growth has to be an organic process where people research, pick the tokens they want to be invested in and make their move accordingly. Progression will take time to evolve and mature but having positive tabloid attention concerning anything crypto-related, can only be a good thing in my view.

I can forgive but I won't forget. After all, deceitful behavior is one of the most despised human personality traits. But as the saying goes, "time heals all wounds" and right now, collective unification instead of unabashed rivalry or hatred, appears to be a sensible step forward into the future.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this too. Bless you all...

This is indeed the only grown-up post about DLive I've read since they left.

Thanks, man...

Great perspectives as we need to foster the growth of the overall crypto and blockchain communities even if it means looking past some of these experiences. Experiences are what allow us to learn so I am sure we have learned a bit during this time!

I'm with you 100%, man. Very well said. :)

Really strong write-up, @ezzy. I agree with you wholeheartedly in that whatever the context of DLive a) leaving the Steem blockchain and b) snagging PewDiePie, it’s ultimately good for the community as a whole that more eyes are looking at the crypto community.

“A rising tide raises all boats,” as the saying goes.

It's not a rising tide, it's competition. Facebook didn't "raise the tide" for MySpace, Friendster, Bebo or the other emerging social networks, it cannibalized them.

A good point well made, @demotruk

Yep... That's all I was trying to get across, mate.

It's certainly a good thing for the whole blockchain thing.

Personally, I wouldn't trust them any more.

vimm.tv is love! ;-)

Lol, nobody in the STEEM community can ever trust them again, no...

Lol?
But then I wonder why there are still some of us streaming there...

I believe if PewDiePie knew the truth of DLive milking STEEM he would discuss that on his channel. Most people are ignorant about Dlive departure from STEEM including me. So I did some searching...

More people should read STEEM Post on Dlive exit from STEEM 7 months ago like below posts:

The shame of the situation is that he may never know of the STEEM drama. Not that it would matter now anyways, I'm sure. Us small fry have no way of communicating the truth to him. Such is life, eh? I say we simply move on from here. :(

What to do but to move on. At least more DApps and projects on STEEM even on this bear season. Future will be bright.

Couldn't agree more.

We shouldn't forgive them because they haven't sought forgiveness. They don't think they did anything wrong.

I've made some posts on the topic recently - I'm skeptical that what they have is real decentralised cryptocurrency, for a number of reasons. IMO they are riding the buzz of crypto and decentralisation while having the practical benefits of centralization.

I use "forgive" in the loosest sense of the word. If there was any "forgiveness" required, that would imply I harboured some sort of resentment towards them. I don't. That's not to say I wish them success in the future either. My stance is neutral as I'm past caring about what happened anymore and am looking at the bigger picture now. But yes, anyone who still "hates" them is completely within their right to do so. I totally get it.
