Identity and Population 🏝️ Country and People of the Dominican Republic

Hola mis Steemians

The national and personal identification

has the origin in the history. The real difference to the other countries in the third World is that the Spaniards destroyed here in the Caribbean almost all aborigines and their culture. This allowed them to reorganize the island purely to their needs. With imported slaves from Africa, similar to the indigenous Tainos.

The Antilles of modern times

are a great example of cultural ramifications that share a common historical development. A diverse, cultural mosaic made up of the heritage of local Aborigines, Africans and Europeans, creating a local identity today. It is a region with very different population densities, many different languages and vast amounts of contrasts in political and social terms.

Also the many different color shades

and especially the hair also play an important role in society. The brighter and "whiter" the skin, the more appreciation and attention one has here.

Men cut their hair very short (almost like a gawk) and the women walk around with huge curlers and pull out their kinky hair. European women, on the other hand, go to the barber to have their hair curled. Just the opposite here.

Without doubt,

Dominican culture has received the greatest influence from the Spaniards. Official religion, political institution, legislature, evaluation concepts, traditions and, of course, the language, inherit the Spanish Conquista.

The process of mixing of different races and cultures, began with the first contacts of Europeans and the Tainos. Thus, this process also influenced the culture of the country.
The special production of cassabe bread, a part of Dominican cuisine (e,g. yuca, corn, batata, peanut, beans or pineapple), the canoe, the hammock and the lamb (as a musical instrument), as well as la castería (Trenzado) are also inherited the original inhabitants of the Tainos.

Although actually Spanish, the language also contains many words of the natives. In addition, the slaves brought from Africa have enriched the language and expression.

In the early 18th century

also slaves came from the French side of the island (now Haiti) in the Spanish part (the present Dominican Republic). They escaped especially from the wild French.

These were first and foremost slaves brought directly from Africa to Saint-Domingue (now Santo Domingo). Especially in the areas and neighborhoods such as San Lazaro de los Minas, a district of Santo Domingo - located on the other side of the Rio Ozama. These areas have preserved their true old character to this day (some feel like they are in Africa).

The heritage of the Cocolos is mainly preserved by slaves brought in from the Lesser Antilles at the end of the 19th century / early 20th century.

A Creole or Dominican culture of its own developed from the fundamental cultural elements of the Spaniards, Tainos and Africans, as well as smaller ones such as Asians, Arabs and Jews.

Thus, the Dominican culture can be incorporated into the Caribbean, but it has only small traces of the Cuban and the Puerto Rican.
