Looting of corpses in the Dominican Republic

in #life5 years ago (edited)

Hola mis Steemians

A good acquaintance of the family (a Dominican woman) recently had the "pleasure" of going to a funeral in La Vega. But what she reported afterwards was quite violent.

One thing in advance:
In the Dominican Republic it happens again and again (depending on the region) that you desecrate graves to get organs or skulls. Some Satanic sects are said to be responsible for this. But nobody knows that so exactly. This happens however rather rarely and increases in regions where many "Brunos" are active.

Corpse damage and theft of skulls from a cemetery in Santo Domingo Este in August 2018

Much more frequently one reports here however of so-called "metal woodpeckers"

Not only manhole covers or cables are stolen - metal thieves steal padlocks, crosses, lattices, and everything else that is somehow made of metal from the cemeteries.

So much for "rest in peace".

But what happened at the funeral?

After the funeral service at the cemetery, the relatives knowingly removed all metal fittings from the coffin and pierced holes in the wooden coffin.

The reason for the damage: This is to prevent the coffin from being dug out later; or, if it is walled in, to prevent the grave from being broken open.

No metal - no thief - so simple

Obviously the thieves also have connections to the administrations and local authorities and therefore know in advance where to get what.
So here the relatives deliberately stole the metal (especially the fittings) to prevent theft. And the damage to the coffin was done for the same reason - also intentionally. Not somehow a ritual or an outburst of rage because you hadn't inherited anything,

Broken coffin - no theft - quite simple

Because these boxes also have a high price in the meantime and theft of coffins is reported more and more frequently. For this reason, aluminium coffins are no longer buried or bricked in. Because with aluminium coffins, theft would be almost inevitable - because aluminium is expensive and has a good price on the market.

What should I say about that? Once again, I almost miss the words.

But scruples, ethics, morals and the similar things are not given with thieves and crooks anyway.

Everything goes its Caribbean (other) way...
