Already the Spaniards, who came in the 15th century to the second largest island of the Antilles, hoped for the gold and above all for the many riches of the Taino Indians. By entering the island they had the wealth of the country right before their eyes. And Columbus also wrote in his logbook:

"Never before my eyes had seen anything more beautiful than this island".

The green and rich plant kingdom adorns the landscape of the entire Dominican Republic and amazes people from all over the world.

It is hard to believe that the sugar cane seedlings were brought to the Caribbean island by the Spanish explorers and that in many Caribbean countries sugar cane has become pure (liquid) gold. Especially in the east and also in other regions of the Dominican Republic the business on the sugar cane fields dominates.

The management

of the sugar cane plantations is an extremely hard physical labour, which is mainly carried out by Haitian migrant workers. The working conditions on the large fields are extremely hard and very sweaty.

In the heat of the Caribbean sun, the sugar cane is cut, bundled and prepared for transport. On the one hand, machines are used today for field work. But the actual cutting is still done by hand and the payment is low.

Sugarcane: a valuable export commodity

of the Dominican Republic and the pure gold for a good rum production. The largest sugar mill in the world today is located in La Romana in the southeast of the island and was founded around 1912. The owners of the company are the richest large landowners of the Dominican Republic and thus also the largest private employer in the country.

Rum - the most famous national drink

from the Dominicans, is made directly from sugar syrup or sugar cane juice. Rum production has been a tradition here for many centuries and is regarded as the aromatic drink with an expression of Caribbean feeling.

Above all, the art of special distillation and many years of storage in large wooden barrels guarantee the unique and unmistakable taste. Rum is generally stored for between three and eight years.

Here in the Dominican Republic, Brugal and Ron de Barcelo are among the most coveted varieties of their kind. The rums, which have been stored for up to 30 years, belong to the absolute top class. The famous Brugal is one of the best varieties on the island and has carried the tradition of its founder Andres Brugal Montener since 1988.

The basic prerequisite for this is storage in oak barrels for the bouquet, the brownish colour and the slightly sweet taste of the rum.

Brugal stands for best quality with high quality workmanship as well as for sustainability in the production of sugar cane. Above all, the perfect rum quality of the Dominican Republic generates a great deal of revenue for the local company. Brugal is the third largest producer of rum in the world.
