HOLDING YOU BACK

Paradigms written long ago
Placing pounds of crushing weight upon your dreams
It's your responsibility, we are told
Manipulated, we act out of duty and honor
Sacrificing ourselves for her comfort and leisure
Surprised when our obligations only make us into fools
Another benefits from your unrelenting selfless labor
You have become a slave, captive to her cause
Head hangs low in miserable sorrow
What about me, you cry
My life surely has value beyond serving the one I love
Perhaps, however, you've committed yourself now
To a mindset holding you back and under her thumb
A victim to a false sense of chivalry
Constant giving without consideration in-kind
Your mind is warped, twisted by lust
You crave her approval in all that you do
And settle for feelings of worthlessness
When she scolds you for not doing enough
Wake up my friend, you already are a real man
Your prison is in your mind
It's time to be selfish
And happiness you will find
