Fear Factory: Did they accidentally design clean death metal?

in #life6 years ago

Look at death metal now, it is almost certainly going to have "clean " lyrics in there too. I don't recall anyone doing it before Fear Factory did. If you know differently, we should talk. I don't pretend to be the authority on this subject. I am just speaking from my own life. The world of metal owes a lot to Fear Factory IMO.

I feel bad for FF, because i don't think they actually ever made any money

This doesn't mean i am correct. I honestly don't know if i am.

It just means i am subject to the opportunities to view things / life through my own eyes. However, if i am correct. The people who have made loads of money by taming down death metal to appeal to a wider audience owe a bunch of money to Fear Factory.

I first encountered Fear Factory completely by accident at a festival i was attending at Brandywine, Maryland purely because Obituary was headlining it. I had heard a song or two by them prior to going to this show but while i was in the (poorly attended) field watching them warm up for Obituary, I noticed one thing... This was the first time i had ever heard vocals in a song in this sort of metal that I could actually understand the words. The singer actually had kind of a nice voice and it was melodic.

I know that is common now, but back in 1992 that was extremely rare, if not entirely never-done-ish.

.... i was completely blown away because at that point of my life I had never heard anything like this before and i wanted more. It was completely unknown to me that the rest of the industry would wait 10 years and then do exactly that. No one had ever heard clean and growly voices from the same person in the same band, ever.

This is the only song that MAYBE anyone who is not a die-hard metal fan might have heard.

there is not a video since the band members could probably barely afford the gas for their reapey-looking van at the time

Let's get one thing straight: Fear Factory is NOT by any means, a legendary band. They have a relatively piss-poor record as far as sales are concerned. I just think that for whatever reason, they happened to stumble on something many years before someone else figured out how to monetize it and they deserve credit for it.

I heard it because i happened to be really really into the scene at the time. I'm not special, i'm just lucky i guess.

I'm not trying to say that Fear Factory is bad. Please don't think that. I am actually trying to say they may have accidentally (or intentionally) invented modern-day death metal.

Sort:

Nope.. Sorry. I don't like this. Too "Death" for me.. I'm running back to Baby Metal!! Sometimes it's hard to figure out the pioneers of something unless you are well absorbed into the industry. Sounds like you hit quite a few venues in your day. Were you here at this Bizarre Concert?

It just means i am subject to the opportunities to view things / life through my own eyes

Yeah I totally agree with you, each human has got a different perspectives of viewing life occurrence. And this brings about different opinions too.
Some Music back in the 1990’s are evergreen, so many great talent still wallows in the dark waiting to be discovered. Their group name tho 🤦🏽‍♂️. {Fear factory} sounds horrific.
I know a show { Fear Factor } it’s really a fear factor
Thanks for bringing them to lime light { Their song isn’t bad as you said and the voice melodic just as you described it} conclusively You are a great lover of rock music

Most people who originate things don't usually enjoy it to the fullest and next person who makes it popular takes the credit. Just like the way Michael Jackson made moonwalk popular and most people forgot bobby brown originated moonwalk. Fear Metal is one of those who suffered the same fate

Truly said boss

The metal world owes a lot to Fear Factory IMO.

You could not say it in a better way, after the problems that arose after Digimortal, in March of 2002, the group dissolved. When in 2004 it was known that the group was working on a new album, it made me crazy.

"I heard it because i happened to be really really into the scene at the time. I'm not special, i'm just lucky i guess".
I love that a lot. Thanks for sharing.

Back then in 1992, I'm sure the fear factory were not thinking of inventing something new, they were just trying to get things done in some more unique ways, but here is the invention still making ways after well over 20 years. Smile

Those old time singers used their sweat to pave way for the new generational artist to trend. The new generational artist do little packaging to the invention of those people and call it their own.

Though music is better now due to research and modern instruments, but true music belong to the past and credit must be given to old artist too, most of them do not make a penny for their invention just like the fear factory, yet their works had a lasting impact in the industry.

How is Iceland today?

times have changed @gooddream. so I think everybody has the right to like it or not .. but every person produces something new must be respected every work .. I am very sure if this flow of music will triumph again.

don't get me wrong but there is no way to respect everyone .
I attended over 200 small gigs or concerts where only new band or demo bends come to play their music . some of them have sponge instead of brain .
I can't explain it my english is not too good to articulate it in right way . if someone support everything maybe he don't have his own opinion or spine .
I understand what you are saying we don't need to offend them but they gotta know they suck .

Great post
I just believe the "Fear factory" did not receive goid gestures from their fans.In respect to what @yungchief said I think ,the gesture was placed on a third party
Fear factory rocks.Meanwhile the fact that they could not make a great video was pseudo-crazy.
But I still respect them

there is not a video since the band members could probably barely afford the gas for their reapey-looking van at the time

Lol i was actually expecting a video there, but ouch

.... i was completely blown away because at that point of my life I had never heard anything like this before and i wanted more

you were blown away? wow! i wish i could calm myself to listen to and try to like metal, its soo not my thing :(, but i like that you like it :D

well, we all like what we like... right? I don't know why i was drawn to metal but i was and i am still am. It probably has a lot to do with Satan's constant luring call to the underworld that beckons me ever closer with every breath i draw.......

Or maybe i just like aggressive motivational music. One of the 2.

It probably has a lot to do with Satan's constant luring call to the underworld that beckons me ever closer with every breath i draw

hahaha, this is rather hilarious and not likely to be the case

metallic mind, with a sense of humour you are a handful lol

I know these guys. Never really thought of them as death metal. More like robot metal.

Fear Factory may not have reached the heights they deserved but they left quite the impressive steel-toed boot print in the history of our favorite music genre

lol. perhaps you are accurate
