Pull Up Workout Video - Getting Started and Increasing Your Max Reps

Pull ups are hard, especially if you are a beginner. But if you want to build up strength to begin doing pull ups or to progress into doing more reps/advanced pull up exercise variations, you will need to have a strong foundation. For this I highly recommend doing scapular exercises, like in the video below demonstrating scapular pull ups to begin developing strong support surrounding the shoulder joint. There are other scapular exercises that would be ideal to include in your workouts such as scapular push ups, scapular rows, and scapular pike press or for more advanced scapular handstand push up.

Next is working through the full range of motion in your pull up training. Partial reps are not as effective and don't look nearly as pretty, lol! If you are not strong enough to do any full range of motion pull ups, then you can try band assisted using a loop resistance band. If using a band is still too difficult, do not strain your way through reps determined to do them. Train Smart and move onto the final exercise (negative rep pull ups) and add the full range of motion with band assistance when your body is prepared to progress. Try not to kip or swing your body to the top of the bar and avoid dropping back down. Always lift and lower with control, aiming for perfect form.

Lastly finish off your set of pull ups by only doing negative reps (lowering). Jump yourself up to the top of the pull up with your eyes looking over the bar, then slowly slowly lower to a Full Extension with your arms. Really take your time coming down, count as you lower 4,3,2,1. Do this as many times as you can. This is one of the most effective ways to develop the strength it takes to perform strict pull ups and chin ups for that matter.
