Oratory prowess is not authority

in #life6 years ago (edited)

I was meditating sometimes ago, those meditations led to this very post.

I have been seeing a lot of bosses that shows they are in charge while all they do is to shout at others, it seems they get satisfaction from it. Makes them have the ‘I am in charge mentality’, which I find amusing.

Oratory prowess in this context is referring to the skill of learning how to speak (especially speeches), manipulate and control people solely through the words of mouth.

The question I asked myself while meditating is “do talking, shouting or long speeches shows authority?”

It is worth knowing that authority refers to the right (power) to give orders or make decisions.

It cannot be that you need to prove you have the authority when you choose to shout or give an important speech.

The display of authority is not a function of your auditory prowess.

I was reading a report on a press conference Paul Pogba (the French international and plays for Manchester United) gave earlier this week, he was trying to say he does not need the captain armband to motivate other players. He made mention of some players that rarely talk in the dressing room, but their authority is been felt while in the field of play.

In football, the captain armband is given to a player whom the coach trusts to lead the team to victory. Which means it shows a degree of authority entrusted by the coach on the player. The authority is not given to the loudest or the sweet/smooth talker, it is assigned to those who can really wield it and other players would follow their footsteps. In summary, a leader!

While it is good to know how to coordinate and give nice soul-lifting and motivational speeches, it should never be considered as displaying authority.

Authority is like a fragrance; when you have it on, you do not need to say you have it people can sense it.

The main aim of this post is the fact that we all ought to learn how to wield authority, and carry it without confusing it with how well we can talk. And if we are to give authority to people, it should be based on their leadership qualities.
