The most enjoyable thing you need in order to have a lovely cross-country ski trip with kids: A BREAK

in #life6 years ago

Yes, this is the big reward of the trip and what makes it all worth the hassle of tears, sweat and frustration. The BREAK is that moment of the cross-country ski trip were everybody is happy and everybody are friends.

It is of course very important to find the perfect spot for the break. It needs to be a bit remote so that you’ll feel completely alone in this world. It needs to be facing the sun and it needs to be in shelter of any wind.

During the break the first thing you need to remember is to remove your inner and sweaty layer of clothes (not applicable to the kids since you’ve done most of the work). Then put on an extra warm layer. Lay out seat pads, and wrap kids in extra blankets for comfort. Feed them healthy food with a promise of chocolate as dessert.

Make sure to feed yourself as well. You’ll need the energy for the return. Don't forget to remove the extra layers of clothes after the break, otherwise you'll die of overheating. In the following video you can see the advantage of having a double mountain sled (and a strong husband). It comes in handy when the kids give up and bringing and extra rope is always useful… The return will go smoothly.

Back in the parking lot there's only one little thing left to do; get the kids and equipment into the car.

The cross-country ski trip is over and you can have these great memories with you for ever. With time, the only thing you'll remember is the beautiful weather and how talented the kids were and the harmony of being in the nature together!

Did you read my first post about bringing the kids out on a cross-country ski trip where I tell you about PATIENCE?

Or my second post with this theme that was about STRENGTH?

I think its so awesome that you take your kids into the back country! such an adventure and sure to maximise their awareness and interest in the world we live in, amazing. im doing a season in fernie, british columbia right now and am appreciating so much the cold, winter climate that you're blessed with too in your location.

Fernie is beautiful. Follow and upvote if you're passionate about winter and the fun that goes with it :D

I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to take my kids out even though it takes some preparations (especially in wintertime). Today we have -10 c and are supposed to hit the slopes with the three kids, but we'll see were we end up. Fernie looks great! Are you working while spending the season there? I used to live four seasons in the Alps and loved it! Look forward to follow your winter adventures! :) Helen

I adore this post. It brings back memories of hiking with my daughter when she was young. She would be such a good sport up the mountain but would melt down on the way down. I would either have to carry her down the rocky trail or leave her behind. She's still with me today so I always chose the treacherous descent with a 5 year old on my back.
I love the video of the break. The little ones look so ready for it. I could feel their exhaustion. Keep up the wonderful posts. I will be looking forward to them.

Hello @mle777, thanks for writing! I'm happy this post could bring back some good memories! I see you're from Oregon, lovely state with the possibilities of many adventures! I look forward to follow your posts as well! :) Helen

Thank you @bitgeek! Great to receive that info, very motivating! :)

Kjempeflott!

i love winters like you have there , fascinating :)

I love it too and feel very lucky! I love snow!
