It would be amiss of me not to write about the times in our lives that are hard and where joy and happiness are lost in a sea of sadness…

The Sea of Sadness

We have times when were are so overwhelmed by life and we feel like that we are in way to deep to even think straight. These are obviously stressful times and as we said on a previous post, stress kills happiness.

There are incredibly sad times in life when relationships end, or we lose loved ones. We need to take the time to grieve and process the loss.

We need sad moments in our life, as we do happy ones. How would we know what happy was if we didn’t know what sadness was? Without sadness, happiness becomes meaningless.

Sometimes though it really helps to inject a little happiness during these tough periods. Sometimes a little hope carries you through. Although, we all know there is no switch to make everything rainbows and unicorns and to be honest in these type of situations I’m not sure we’d want to.

We need time to grieve and come to terms and the stress and overwhelm probably helps us to get stuff done, even when we really don’t feel like it, but what we do need is to see a light at the end of the tunnel. A tiny bit of happiness to give us hope.

How do We Get By in Hard Times?

What can we do to grasp a little bit of happiness when it feels like the world is in tatters around us?

It’s not easy, but the first thing can really help is gratitude. When you feel particularly sad or overwhelmed, think about the people or things in your life that you can be thankful for. If you’ve lost a loved one, feel grateful for the time you spent with them and think about the things you have learned from them and the good times you had together. Sometimes it helps when a funny memory pops in your head. Allow yourself to smile, nothing to feel guilty about.

Sometimes you can be overly stressed at work or in your own business. In cases like these, be grateful for any progress or growth. Many times, in this case, stress and overwhelm are a sign that good things are coming, as you are putting your heart and soul into it.

Remember yesterday’s post?

That habit will see you well here also -perhaps feeling gratitude is too raw, then finding joy in the little things can really help to get you through the days. Have a look at your surroundings and find something to garner a little joy from.

Let things like the sound of a toddler’s laugh from the park put a smile on your face, the feel of the rays on the sun on your face, meditate on how beautiful the moon looks, or immerse yourself in the perfection of a flower. Look around and find comfort in the little things.

Don’t ever forget, even if you are going through hard times, it is okay to look for and appreciate the little moments of happiness.
