Strong winds and heavy rain have battered parts of Italy, causing nine deaths and the worst flooding seen in Venice for at least a decade. Torrential rains also turned major roads into rivers causing chaos across the country. Rome was pelted by huge chunks of ice falling from the sky, which carpeted the streets. The severe weather struck after travelling east from the Iberian peninsula over the weekend.
