The Slip and Slide Incident.

in #life6 years ago

I'm not sure if they still make Slip and Slides these days, but they were all the rage when I was a kid.

What is a Slip and Slide?

It's a long sheet of yellow plastic that folds out like a slide. You connect a garden hose to it. When you turn it on, water will run through little perforations causing the surface to remain wet and slippery.

It's damn fun is what it is.

When I was a kid parents were not so watchful over their children. That's not to say that they didn't care about us. I think they just trusted us more than they probably should have.

As kids, we always took everything to the extreme.

Jumping on the trampoline? Let's cover it with water and then add a bunch of bowling balls. That way it's way more dangerous. No one noticed us doing this every day.

Running around the neighborhood and playing tag? Let's throw giant rocks at each other. When we come home crying covered in blood and bruises we won't tell our parents what really happened.

Probably the best of our crazy ideas though, was the Slip and Slide Incident.

Slip and Slide is meant to be placed on a flat soft surface like a front yard full of dirt and grass. That way if you were to fall off you would simply roll into the waiting lushness of the environment thereby avoiding injury.

Avoiding injury wasn't our thing though.

"What if you connected two or three Slip and Slides?" we thought to ourselves.

The answer is that you will run out of steam about halfway through because your body cannot produce enough speed from running to make it across three full plastic surfaces.

Therefore, we need MORE SPEED.

So how can we produce more speed using the Slip and Slide?

Easy.

First of all, make sure that you're on a property that has a pool in the backyard.

Then follow these easy steps.

1 - Staple the plastic sheets from two Slip and Slides together.

2 - Grab a long ladder and place it against the side of the house.

3 - Run a long garden hose to the roof.

4 - Have your friend stand on top of the roof holding an edge of the Slip and Slide in each hand.

5 - Connect the hose.

6 - Place two rocks on either side of the bottom edge of the second Slip and Slide making sure that is pointed towards the pool.

7 - Turn on the hose and climb the ladder.

8 - Jump on the Slip and Slide and slide from the roof into the pool.

I'm not sure how many stitches John needed though the blood and tears make me think it was quite a few. So much shouting that day.

We were never allowed to use Slip and Slides again after the incident.

It's a shame because we really loved them.

It was okay though. You could always buy slingshots from the grocery store for like three dollars and we still had a drawer full of lighters. John's brother had given us a ton of firecrackers too.

We had a thousand ways to make our own fun.

It's just too bad that after that incident none of them used that wonderful plastic slide.

We used a more cheep solution.. We searched for slopes.. muddied them with water and thats it..

Whatever works.

Poor kid!! lol. That was an elaborate plan for sure. Really good story. I had a slip and slide. Used it once. I injured my right side because our yard had lots of bumps and I hit and uneven spot. I was pretty young and it hurt bad enough I had to stay in bed the rest of the day. After that I was afraid to use it.

Oh we did all kinds of crazy stuff. I honestly can't believe we got away with all of it. Probably made us a lot stronger. It was like being in a boxing ring all day.
