How I Prepare Potato Plants For My Rabbits - eating rabbits.jpg

Rabbit are fun animals, they hardly cause any trouble, are quiet and very cute. You will always love them once you get a hold of one. I normally feed my rabbits with growers mash because that is the food that is readily available in the market and you do not need to go through any stress processing it because it has already been processed. But I also feed them with some of the food waste from the food we eat in the house like yam peels, cassava peels, potato peels and some green vegetables. But what I have observed they love eating most is the potato plants (leaves and branches). It makes a crunchy sound when they are chewing and eating it just the way it sounds when we are eating carrots.

It's my turn, it's my turn, I can't wait for those potato plants, this one seems to be saying. Lol.

It Is Very Healthy For Them

The potato plant is very healthy for the rabbits because it contains all the nutrients the rabbits need to stay healthy, packed with a lot of fiber which is good for their digestive system and also good for the kits to start practicing using their teeth. The reason why I went to get some of the plants this morning is because some of the kits (baby rabbits) have started been weaned (discouraged from sucking) by their mother, they need to start learning how to eat other healthy stuff on their own so that when she is finally separated from them they would still be feeding fine on their own. One amazing thing about feeding them potato plants is that they get so excited once you come into the farm area with the plants it is as if they can perceive the aroma of the plant.

How I Prepare The Plant

After collecting the potato plants from mostly swampy areas because that is where the water potatoes do very well in;

  • I cut them into smaller bits so that they do not entangle the rabbits when put inside the cage. The potato plants are cord like structure, it twines on whatever it grabs a hold on and continues growing and spreading.

  • After cutting them into smaller bits I put them in a big bowl and pure water into it.

  • Next I put some quantity of salt inside and leave them for some time – the salt solution helps to kill any worms, maggots and some other worm like insects that may have perched on the plant while it was taken from the ground.

  • Next we remove the plants from the water and place it in a dry bowl from which we collect the quantity we want to put inside the cages.

And that is it.
