The Changing Language of Mother Tongue

Mother tongue can be defined as “the first language that you learn when you are a baby, rather than a language learned at school or as an adult. “_ Cambridge Dictionary. We are living in a changing world and the world is changing so is everything in it. Those days our mother tongue used to be our native languages but now all that is changing. When we were born what we heard our parents and elder ones around us speaking was our native languages, that became the first language we learnt to communicate with until it was time to start school.

The Change Starts

When we started school we were introduced to a new language and for many countries that were colonized by another country, it is normally the language of the colonizing country you are taught with in school. For some it is English while for others it could be French, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish or German, the list goes on. We are taught is school that these foreign languages are the prepare languages and are discouraged from speaking our own languages in school because they are considered as vernacular and not good for public speaking or official communication.

The Change Continues

As you start your adult life away from family you discover that the foreign language is the official language of your country. This your country has done to make communication flow easily because your country has multiple languages and it will not be advisable to ask people to learn all the languages of your country. Soon you start finding yourself forgetting some of the words in your language.

For some it is even more difficult, they have moved away from their place of birth and have immigrated to a different part of the country or abroad where the language spoken is totally different from the ones they are familiar with. They get married to people of different languages and when the kids start coming they are faced with a totally different language as their mother tongue.

The New Mother Tongue

These kids grow up not knowing anything about your culture or language, your language to them is foreign and sounds even funny or primitive as someone once told me his son told him. They are citizens of the world and not from the quiet little village you came from. A change has happened for which one may not be able to control. I’ve seen people trying their best to stop this change from happening I’ve seen people speaking their parents languages with a foreign accent and the locals sometimes even finds it difficult to understand what is been said. How long can they put up with that and can they transfer the same language correctly to their own children?

Lost Languages

A lot of languages are at the brink of extinction because it is rarely spoken or used as a means of communication again and as time goes on you may never see anyone who can speak them, this treat is more visible in smaller unknown communities in third worlds where documentation of things is not a part of their culture, for them documentation comes in form of storytelling and with time the message is lost.

In Conclusion

We should do all we can to preserve our native languages by making the official languages even if it was in a regional area and not national where there are multiple languages. Hebrew and Latin were one time at the treat of extinction but they are getting their acts together. We can do the same for our indigenous languages too.

This is really a problem, maybe you can somehow introduce the lessons of the native language in schools, so that the children would not forget

That is indeed a possible solution. Thanks for reading.

We have a lot of republics where different nationalities live, and they learn their native language at school, among others, although I confess that many of the young people do not want this

It is sad that some native languages are being lost. With the loss of native language part of the culture dies. Some of the tradition, customs, and stories also get lost.
