Bad Haze and Some Environmental Thoughts

Bad weather for the day which is damn hazy, just happen I will be staying indoor for most of the time as I need to pack all the stuff and ready to move it to a new place. The air was choking and have that burnt smell whereby when I stayed outside for like 10 minutes, I could already feel the discomfort. My nose starts to have mucus and I can feel it is harder to breath. I also felt easily dry off as the air is dry and all the haze particle is floating around. This really leads us to think about the importance of air, a resource that we may always take for granted and never pay full attention to it until it becomes scarce.

Air itself, specifically the oxygen that we needed is an essential resource, but we do not need to pay for it. Unlike water, fresh water has now been privatized especially drinkable potable water. As a commodity, people can trade and invest in it due to its scarcity. However, air is very hard to control as long as we are at the outdoor, we breath in air from the atmosphere. Unless, the air outdoor has been badly polluted and we can only access fresh air (oxygen) through indoor. Then, air could become a commodity then. However, I do not want this to happen as it is utterly stupid to have such great environment that could provide us with so much resources into waste.

Even like the event now, we could not do much but to stay indoor, wear mask and pray that the haze will dissipate soon. From some news that I read about the issue, Indonesia had been doing some counter measures that would potentially control the fire spread. Unfortunately, the poor maintenance of the facility and also the intentional fire by agriculture concession holders rather than small farmers. This is something that should be taken seriously and the government could impose harder compound for burning and promote incentives for maintaining the forest’s peat.

Well again, making our living environment better is always my passion and I will be more involved as I move forward in my future career path. It is important that both built environment and the people who live within shares the same vision to have that urge to make the environment better. Again, this brings me to think about the economic to create a clean environment versus allowing development to happen since a lot of industry like manufacturing, depends on the leeway from the government to implement less efficient pollution control measure to operate. That’s why you could see big manufacturing factories move from nation to nation as to seek for such “discount”. If all the nations come into unanimous agreement that there are no such leeway for pollution related infrastructure, then it will push the industry to innovate better and cheaper pollution prevention system into the market. Nevertheless, the incentive has yet to push everyone to such extent but it is good to start step by step.

Looking from another perspective, environmental engineering will be a bright profession to be in as the demand will be getting higher when the policies are getting stricter and the standard are getting higher. Putting ourselves in the line of industry would potentially earn us big money if we get ourselves a spot and grow well there.
