How To Build Sustainable Off-The-Grid Eco HomessteemCreated with Sketch.

in #life5 years ago (edited)

I've visited many eco-villages while traveling around the world. Building homes that leave a smaller carbon footprint is something we can all benefit from and just makes sense.

This kind of lifestyle is not for everyone but as the population of the planet grows it's something we all need to start thinking about.

I've build a lot of ecological homes myself including straw bale construction, cob, earth, and ferrocement homes and tool a few courses on how to do it.

One of the coolest things about building these kinds of homes is how simple it is to do and fun. It's amazing how many people with no building experience are drawn to this type of construction and want to help and get involved. That's not to say that you don't need any experience but these techniques are more accessible to the average person.

There are a lot of books, videos, and courses you can take to help but one course I highly recommend is the Bio Veda Academy which combines 6 top international workshops in one Master Class.

These classes will help you design a complete home from start to finish and create a bio-char water system so you can live completely off the grid using local materials.

It also covers how to recycle 100% of your wastewater and use it to create gardens around your home and create water sustainability. You'll learn how to treat water from your site how to create water storage from rainwater harvesting and even create methane gas for cooking and heating.

The course includes:

  • Ferro cement water tanks
  • Slow Sand Bio Char filtration
  • Constructed Wetland for waste and pool water treatment
  • Air Crete Dome home construction
  • Super Adobe dome home construction
  • Underground and above ground sandbag water tanks

This video shows you a demo of what the course includes and is packed with practical information.

Even if you're not building an eco home these videos are really cool to watch.

I have been following you for some time now, but was not aware you were interested in this.

Personally i am not able to travel, but I am playing with a couple of idea’s that are also in this area, touch the same sectors, but then a little bit different. And hope to create a project out of it one day.

I hope you don’t mind if i quote you in my manifesto (offcourse this will be with links to your article)

I’m looking forward to see more of your writings, and maybe, when i write the manifesto i just talked about ... you can read that

Greetings

Thanks, and please send me a link to your manifesto. I would love to read it. Yes, I'm very interested in building food forests and sustainable practices. It's one of my passions in life.

Ahh how cool! 😀 I really want to build my own eco home in the next year or 2, I just need to find some land where I am able to do so!

That’s amazing you’ve been involved in lots of home builds 😀

It's been a while but yes, I have built quite a few eco homes. It's a lot of work but also tons of fun and the vibe inside these types of homes is inviting and unique.

I hope you get your project off the ground. You'll be happy with the results and the energy costs once they're sone is next to nothing.

Saw the straw build ones but what you need to keep in mind is that many of these houses are not allowed to build by governments. There are so many rules it is hard to build something different, cheaper or ... as the rest of the street.

It would be ecological as well to use what we already have. There are plentyof unused buildings, houses, factories, shops, churches, etc that with some simple touches can make a great home as well.

The US, especially California, has a lot of regulations. That's why I live in Mexico and like to travel to other parts of the world where they can build things like this easier.

I built a strawbale house in California once and the regulations were nonexistent, but Jerry Garcia from the band The Grateful Dead spent a small fortune to have the building regulators do all the testing needed for straw bale houses to pass inspections and it turned out that it exceeded the requirements in every category. I was there for the testing and was amazed.

I'll see if I can find some of those videos and information for you.
