Are you one of those travellers who always returns with more things in the suitcase then when you left? Did you have a hard time fitting everything in your bag at the end of your trip? Did you feel terrible for not being able to bring with you that souvenir you had to leave behind and got stuck on your mind the whole day?

If the answer to the questions above was yes, then you need to learn about the packable backpacks.

What is a packable backpack?

A packable backpack is a ultra light backpack that folds up to a small notebook size which can be compressed and carried around in your pocket, purse or anywhere until needed. It is a great idea for those looking to fit more in less space. Even if you know how to pack your suitcase like a pro, you may need one!

What are the benefits of having a packable backpack?

Hands free. First of all, a backpack enables you to carry your belongings and be able to use your hands. Imagine carrying a bag in your hand for a two hours walk. That wouldn’t be a pleasant stroll after the first fifteen minutes.

Fold and pack. The fact that you can tuck away the backpack until the next time you will need it is key. It’s a space-saver!

Lightweight. Having a lightweight backpack tucked into your jeans pocket or your purse allows you to use it as day backpack. While exploring a new destination, it may be easier to carry less things with you. It can also be a lifesaver when you just can say no to a souvenir that you would be tempted to leave behind because you worry about not having enough space to pack it in.

No lower back pain. Designed with the lightweight concept in mind, these folding backpacks will not increase the stress on your back.

Water-resistance. Many of the available packable backpacks have the water-resistant feature enabling you to maintain your belonging dry in case of unexpected showers.

Easy care. Given that most of them do not present an inner structure, it is easy to keep them clean. Just throw them in the washer or clean them with a damp cloth and that’s it! You may want to hang them to dry instead of using the dryer, or at least read the care instructions.

Price. You can’t beat the price! The price range for a regular backpack is way higher than for this ones.

What are the main things you should look for when buying one?

Capacity. First thing that you need to keep in mind would be the volume. Before going shopping try to decide what capacity would benefit you more? A medium size pack or a large capacity one? It all depends on what you will be using it for! You may want to select a model that will accommodate all your essentials.

Tear-resistant fabric. When you are on the lookout for packable backpacks you should search for durable fabrics that will withstand the test of time. You will need to choose a pack made out of premium materials (nylon and polyester are quite common) that can handle the travel with ease. While reading the specs of each product, aim for the tear-resistant label.

Either if you buy it online or in-store, you always have to examine carefully the details of the backpack, such as closures, pockets, zippers, adjustability of the straps and all the other features. This way, you ensure that you chose a folding and portable backpack that will last you a while. You don’t want it to tear as soon as you checked-in or while being tossed around with the other hard case suitcases on the airport carousel.

Water-resistant fabric. In addition, you may want to purchase waterproof packable backpack which will enable you to keep your belonging dry. A lot of models have the water-resistance feature. You may want to check out the Tuban and 90 Packable backpacks!

Pockets. Since most of the models tend to be one size fits all without internal storage dividers, try to opt for a model that features an extra zipper pocket in front and two side pockets where you could fit a water bottle.

Mesh-looking straps. You need breathable straps for a comfortable fit. No one likes having sweaty marks on the shoulders! The cushioning of the shoulder straps offers a long wearing comfort and effective load dispersal.

Please note that the article above has been previously posted on my Pilgrmr website. I thought it would make a nice post on Steemit as well. Some of you may enjoy reading it!

Great tip! I never would have thought to look for a packable backpack!

There are quite practical! I always have one in my bag!

HAha... I have one of these in my travelling kit (usually in my violin bag) all the time! It's great for carting aroudn concert shoes as well! When I travel, I always pick up lots of nice food and stuff for the kids... so, I'm always over packed on the return!

I discovered them only last year and loved them.

Wow I have never heard of these. It does make sense to buy one of these.

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.

It does, especially when you have to take a flight back home and you wonder where you will put your recent purchases. I usually check the carry-on as a second bag and use the packable backpack as my flight bag.

Great idea! You can even use them to pack the clothes you've already worn while traveling to keep them separate from your souvenirs and other things.

Yes, keeping the worn clothes inside of it, separately from the rest of the luggage is what we do.
