Computational thinking, emotional and social intelligences of the people.

Today I want to share with you some reflections of experts in emotional intelligence regarding the evolution of the digital and robotic world:

For some time now, society has been demanding an agreement on education that will put an end to the constant legislative reforms of each government and, in turn, adapt the school curriculum to the students' current needs, especially with regard to the appropriate use of new ones. technologies.

These needs include, according to the doctor in Artificial Intelligence by the Technological Institute of Massachusets (MIT) Nuria Oliver, the learning of computational thinking, complemented with the development of the emotional and social intelligences of the people.

In an interview given to EFE on the occasion of her investiture last Thursday as Doctor Honoris Causa of the Miguel Hernández University (UMH), Oliver explained that this subject, which is already part of the curriculum of many countries, offers knowledge about algorithms, analysis of data, networks, internet, programming and hardware, which fosters a way of thinking that "serves all areas of life".

From his point of view, this subject would allow a certain democratization in the development of new technological tools, so that "new vocations" would be created among the students and, above all, the students, thus ending the "erroneous stereotype" of the students. computer programmers as "antisocial" or "frikis" people.
In addition, receiving training in all these aspects would help to "encourage critical thinking" of people in the use of technology, which, therefore, would make it more difficult for companies to abuse, for example, in the handling of data. of the users.

However, for Oliver, "this is not enough", since it must be complemented with the development of human skills that, at present, are not being fostered, such as creativity and emotional and social intelligences.
In his opinion, the paradigm shift that is bringing with it the rise of new technologies, including artificial intelligence, requires that people have skills such as resilience, patience, acceptance of long-term gratification or that internalize that the dynamic world in which they live requires constant learning.

"The big problems we face are not going to be solved in 140 characters, it takes a lot of perseverance," he stressed, while at the same time it has influenced "the model of studying a career and ending with 22 years thinking that you already have all the necessary knowledge for life, you are obsolete "and, to adapt to that," it is a skill of emotional intelligence, not of knowledge ".

Equally important is not to lose social skills, something that can happen if human beings alone communicate through rudimentary technological tools, such as those now, that "are not capable of transmitting non-verbal information."
Oliver is a strong advocate of technology not as a solution, but as part of it and as a key tool to guarantee the survival of the human species.

He has lamented the "very negative feeling" that is being generated among public opinion in recent years and has considered that there is no point in trying to stop technological progress because it is part of the human spirit.
He has insisted on the need to prepare new generations and society to "make the best and make the best decisions in this context", and has considered teacher training as the biggest obstacle that can face the change of educational model , for "the mental challenge" and the great economic investment needed.

The technological development is vertiginous and substitutes jobs, services and payments; However, the advance must be accompanied by the humanist part and not be used to replace creativity or work force, but to improve in other aspects.

The academic of the Faculty of Higher Studies (FES) Aragon, Humberto Mancilla Alonso, reported that all over the world, workers are replaced in the manufacturing processes to reduce operating costs and increase profits, and services are already served by Internet.

In a statement from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), explained that since the creation of the concept 'mechatronics', decades ago, the use of robots has become widespread, and the first thing that comes to mind are those dedicated to assemble vehicles, but its insertion in other activities has been massive.
He indicated that robots are also widely used in the pharmaceutical industry, because robotics is not only present in the trades, but in the professions.

"Technology generates jobs, but in smaller numbers and more specialized, so more and more training is required," he said, noting that increasingly, for example, smart cellular telephony is also being generated, but also more and more. expensive.

In this sense, Mancilla Alonso said that we should avoid arriving at the moment when we do not even understand technology and we are only consumers.
"We have not worried about the consequences; we must be more aware of what we do with this knowledge and with the planet. "

By pointing out professions that could be performed by machines, he commented, for example, that in the delivery of justice, if artificial intelligence systems interact to determine innocence or guilt, the presence of lawyers or judges would no longer be necessary.

In addition, more and more automated systems are being generated. Now it is no longer necessary to go to the government offices to process certified copies of birth certificates, it is done through the Internet and the document is generated practically in real time.

"The staff that previously collated the data in the books is no longer required; a two-week process takes place in a day, "he said.
Mancilla Alonso recalled that this substitution already occurred during the Industrial Revolution, when new technologies (mainly steam) replaced humans; but new jobs emerged, which did not exist before and demanded specialization.

The problem is that, unlike then (when the changes were gradual and people adapted little by little), today the development of technology is vertiginous; "We are going very fast and society is not adapting."
He warned that added to the above, people try to consume "practical" and prefabricated products, because artificial intelligence does many things for people.

"Do not worry, do not think, artificial intelligence does it for you, and that makes the picture darker. New technologies are in such common activities as shopping; but not only that, but the algorithms on the Internet make recommendations based on the tastes of each person.

He added that every year, for example, new smart phones come out, which are acquired regardless of cost, but it is worth asking what we will do when the technology exceeds our purchasing power, who can afford it and who will develop it?
