More tales of the house: thieves

in #life6 years ago (edited)

Petty theft is rather common in the suburb I live in. The crime rate is high in general, including violent crime, but there are also plenty of chancers wandering about that will steal washing off the line or any other salable items they find in the yard. My house is not easily accessible from the road, which protects us from housebreakers and other violent, gun-toting criminals that are known to frequent the area. Instead, there are opportunists who wander the hill.

One day I noticed that my hosepipe was no longer around. "Oh well!" ...off to buy another and make a mental note not to leave it in the yard any more.

Early one morning last year, I woke up and went outside. I noticed someone's back moving away from the gate but I assumed that it was one of my tenants just leaving. In those days, there was also a massive bush of jasmine that obscured the view of the gate.

I have cleared away a lot of the bushes since then

I went around the side of the house for a few minutes, leaving my front door open. On my return, I saw someone walking out of the house holding my power tools, which were in the entrance, because I was renovating the bathroom at the time. I shouted at him and he ran out of the yard and started making his way over the the rocks. I called for my tenants, in the hope that one of them might be around and gave chase. At the time, I had my arm in a sling because I had separated my shoulder, that is: torn the ligament that joins the shoulder blade to the collar bone so I was pretty much useless anyway but I was so angry I started chasing the man. He dropped my drill and one of the basin taps when he had to clamber over some razor wire but still had my angle-grinder, heavy duty extension cord and one of the basin taps.

I lost my shoes (flip-flops) fairly early on but continued chasing him anyway and yelling for my tenant. This part of the chase was though the grass, over the sharp rocks. Eventually, after running about 200m over rocky terrain I lost sight of him and decided that it was pointless to continue and made my way back home. It was then that I realised that my feet were lacerated and bleeding from running barefoot. The sudden running in the very cold early morning air brought on a bout of exercise-induced asthma and I spent the rest of the day coughing and had to soak my feet repeatedly in hot water with epsom salts for the next few days to prevent infection.

Back home, I got a new lock for the gate and told the tenants to use it because we had gotten rather careless about that. A few weeks later, I also removed the jasmine so that the view of the gate is unobstructed.

A week or two later, some irate men brandishing a cricket bat turned up at our place, they were hunting petty thieves and claimed to have put one in hospital after they caught him. I really hoped it was the one who stole my tools although a couple of months later, I came out of my house one morning and saw another unkempt character outside the gate. I asked him his business and he replied that he was "just passing by". I told him to remove himself and noticed that he left by the same route the previous thief had taken. I didn't get a good look at the original one's face although I'm pretty certain that it was the same one.

Sort:

Holy crap, that's some pretty scary sounding stuff! We live in a pretty docile area for the most part, although I'm pretty sure there are a couple of meth labs in the denser part of the woods backing up on the neighborhood. Most of us call the area around there "Tweaker Flats." Most of the petty crime here is of the "smash and grab" car theft variety... and it's almost all drug related.

Stay safe!

=^..^=

Yup, these opportunists are also drug addicts

OMG you poor thing, you were already injured then you ended up hurting yourself more. 😿I can't believe how gutsy the guy was to go into your house while you were around the corner. It is really scary.

It does take balls to do that but these are drug addicts and they will do what it takes to acquire their morning fix

That is true, they will do just about anything just for that next fix

It sounds pretty wild over there. You need to train your cats to attack. How is yoda doing?

Well, Toffee once attacked the neighbour's pit bull when it came in the yard.
The interesting thing about keeping cats is the superstitious dread they evoke in many local people. I've had many people refuse to come in my house because of the cats and even more so when i had black cats. I'm convinced that they kept me safe when I lived in a dodgy building in the inner city some years ago.

Yoda is liking his new food and eating better and he got his liver pills for the first time today. I'm grateful to report that he likes the taste and all I have to do is break them into smaller pieces and he eats it out of my hand. He is a weirdo like that. So we will see

Amazing, maybe its time to get a couple of black cats.😊 That makes it so much easier that Yoda will eat his medicine out of your hand, otherwise it can be quite challenging.

I would love more black cats. Unfortunately, I currently have 6 and adding more will only create conflict.

It's horrible. Thieves steal your property. We must buy weapons and protect our property. In the house you need to set the alarm.

Please be careful. You have a place that is difficult to be seen by others yet the ones that you don’t want seem to find their way. Have you thought about setting traps that make noise or putting up a hunting or wildlife came? 🐓🐓

Our best defence is the fact that there is always someone on the property. Clearing bushes and keeping the gate locked has helped.

Ouch!

holy shit, please do stay safe! One of my BFFs is south african (from Pretoria, she grew up on an ostrich farm) and has told me of these tales where cars full of gun toting thugs will follow you home and block your car into your own driveway and rob you on the spot. It happened to them, but thankfully the robbers weren't expecting someone to be in the house already so mid-robbery the front door flew open and my friend's father was there with his own shotgun and they ended up fleeing. gotta say though, that guy running with all your tools must have been pretty strong to run with all that stuff! hopefully they got him.

I do try, South Africa is a crazy place, I'm rather used to it by now :(

You must carry numerous weapons on you at all times. At least I hope you do!

Nah, I don't see the point

Nah, I don't really see the point

You have me hanging in despense now.

@therealwolf 's created platform smartsteem scammed my post this morning (mothersday) that was supposed to be for an Abused Childrens Charity. Dude literally stole from abused children that don't have mothers ... on mothersday.
