Understanding the difference between needs and wants will help you make better decisions
Don't choose what you need over what you want.
If we want lasting success and true happiness, we must learn to differentiate a want from a need. A lot of things we go for are not really what we need at the moment. Let us start by studying the difference between a need and a want.
What is the definition of a need?
A need is something that is essential or very important. It is a necessary requirement for survival or attainment of a definite goal. Deficiency of a need can be catastrophic.
What is a want?
A want is what we desire or wish for. It is something we would like to have.
Differences between a want and a need
Human needs are finite, while wants are infinite.
A deficiency of a need causes harmful effects while the lack of a want can be easily managed.
Wants are desires that are optional.
Wants changes over time, while needs are constant.
If you do not need it, take it down the list in your scale of preference.
When making an important life's decision, be very sure you can distinguish between what you want and what you need. That you have a strong desire for something does not mean you need it. If you can still survive and not have any adverse effect for not having it, then it is not a need. If you can still achieve your goals without it, then it is not a need to attaining that particular goal. If you can still have a happy marriage without it, then it should not be criteria for choosing a life partner.
Be careful with your choices because a need can never be ignored without it having a negative effect. Whereas, wants are insatiable and they change over time. You will still want another flashy car. You will still lust after another beautiful woman.
Be wise and pitch your tents around needs and not wants.
Do not ignore what you need because of what you want.

In order for us to make the right decision. We have to apply the principle of "Opportunity Cost" forgoning one thing in the expense of another. Wants are temporary while needs are permanent. When shifted to politics, I can say I want Buhari out of that chair and can say I need someone deserving to occupy that chair.
Yes, checking the opportunity cost of everything we do is very important. Biko leave Buhari matter alone. 😂
