SEALING THE BOTTOM OF THE MOBILE HOME WITH EARTH

in #life5 years ago

Another step forward!

After putting the skirting on our mobile home, we still had to bring the ground up to a level to cover the gap at the bottom. The easiest way was to get some heavy equipment and use the dirt piles I've already got on our land.

With some of the leftover soil from my root cellar/storm shelter build and a borrowed bobcat from my neighbor, I got to work to seal it in.

It's just one more thing crossed off of my to do list, and we are progressing one task at a time!

Back in the eighties I lived in a mobile home much like the one you have on a small plot of land out in the country. I did what you did except that I skipped all the intermittent steps.
I dug a hole. Twelve foot wide...sixty five foot long...four foot deep...and parked my mobile home in it. No front or rear decks were needed. Just step out the door onto the ground.

I used a shovel and a wheelbarrow to do it.

With a couple of doors in the skirting boards, you will have a huge cool storage area under the house.

I'm no expert, but do you think its wise to seal the space under the trailer? It could produce a damp climate under there, which may speed up corrosion or mold growth. We dont build houses here that way, but in footage from the US they seem to have a ventilated space under the houses.

Yeah, I might have to redo some of that.

Looking good! Do you have to worry about the skirting rotting out?

That is what people are mentioning. I'll probably gut the wood up a bit and then put the plastic back over the top.

Sounds like a plan.

It looks like you all had a very productive day on your homestead today. :D Its nice that @grandpa-pepper got to take a few minutes out to show your daughters how to play a bit of golf too. :D
It was great to see mama-pepper in the video too. :D
God bless you and your wonderful family. :D Have an awesome day my fabulous friend! :D

We did something similar with ours. We dug out a small trench along the perimeter where our skirting was going to be installed. We stapled up a long sheet of poly plastic curtain, and placed 8 foot long foam panels into the trench and fastened their tops to the edge of the mobile. We then hung a 2nd plastic curtain along the outside, and covered the whole shebang with metal roofing panels. After the panels were in place we back filled the trench. Air tight in the winter! For the warmer season we built 2 crawl space doors on opposite ends of the home, with screens to allow for air flow. Come winter those small doors are swapped out with insulated panels again to keep out the cold.
